Southport Pier gives way after seven-tonne lorry pulls on to bridge

SOUTHPORT Pier gave way when a seven-tonne lorry pulled on to the decking.

The lorry was delivering kegs of beer to a shop on the pier when the incident happened around 9.45am this morning.

The driver, who didn’t want to be named, had been asked by another HGV driver if he could move his lorry.

He said: “There was no sign to say there was a weight restriction on the bridge, so I pulled forward on to the pier to make room to reverse.

“As soon as I got on the bridge I just felt the pop of the wooden planks underneath the tyres."

The driver jumped out of the cab and called for help. No one was injured.

The police have closed off the pier while the fire service remove the vehicle.
