So I just noticed that Karlsrue, Hansa Rostock, Kaiserslautern and 1860 munich are all in the third tier of German Football!!!

Thats some fall from grace right there. I thought 1860 and Kaiserslautern were two of their big big clubs.

Like I know we have Leeds, Forest, Shef Weds etc in the Championship but thats some big old clubs.

Any other European royalty disappearing down the leagues.

None of those have really been in the big time though, mein Herr, not for any appreciable length of time anyway. Rostock may have won stuff in the old E.Germany but that doesn't really count. Between them they may have sprung the odd surprise, but that's all it will have been. 1860 for example have always been in Bayern's (long) shadow - think Everton with probably even fewer trophies down through the years.

I'm not a big expert on Italian clubs but I wouldn't mind betting there are a few fallen giants among that lot.

Reference to thread content, Kaiserslautern were always a side I regarded as a big European side when I was a kid.

I think if your are looking at it from a European force perspective.. Forest being in the championship.. And being there for some while is so wrong on many levels..

And more recently Villa too..

Hamburg doesn't have a top flight club. That is disaster. For them, not so much for me. I like St Pauli which is not a typical top flight club anyway.

Ayre was 1860 Munich executive last season, that's where it went horribly wrong for them. Kaisuslatern were always in the Bundesliga 1 when I was growing up

Hamburg SV relegated from top flight last season. They had a clock in the stadium highlighting number oy years, days and minutes they had been in top flight. I'm guessing it has rightly been turned off.

The story there is a bit different... Their rivals, Borrusia Mønchenglabach used the last game of the season to clock down the Hamburg relegation. Their fans had a countdown from 30 mins and took away a sheet for every minute Hamburg got closer. That is pure class harasment 😀

Just realised Monchenglabach did this because of the clock. Sorry

You like St.Pauli because that's where the Reeperbahn* is. Go on, admit it.

*[The Reeperbahn is Hamburg's red light district. Er, so I'm told.]

St Pauli as part of the City is much more than reeperbahn. Lot of nice small pubs and lots of concert gigs which I like. St Pauli as a club is the ultimate fan owned club where results is less important than the principles it is built on. Fucking beautiful that such club actually played many years in the top flight.

It's quite true that there's more to St.Pauli than just the Reeperbahn and of course I'm quite prepared to believe you like the place mainly for its pubs and concert gigs. 😉
