i have left out those i consider highly highly highly unlikely..

De Rossi, Yaya Toure, Essien, Xavi..

There are a few in there that would take a lot of money to sign.. transfer fee and wages.. And also a couple that many would view has near impossible to sign..

however.. i have added them anyway... Goodluck.

Can I vote for someone not on the list? Christian Poulsen

Featured in Hodgson's picks on top 10 players to watch in South Africa

8. Christian Poulsen (Denmark): At the beginning of the season he was unwanted at Juventus, who had signed the Brazilian international Felipe Melo for 20m euros to take his place.

Despite this replacement signing, Poulsen started Juve’s league campaign and was an important figure for them up until the time he broke his leg. Now fully recovered, I expect him to shoulder responsibility for Denmark’s midfield where as a holding player he not only reads the game but also provides the tackles, the passing and the example to team-mates that coach Morten Olsson depends upon. He’s relied upon heavily to dictate the style of play. Denmark could surprise a few people.

We haven't been linked with him, but I would like to see us go in for Michael Bradley. Probably not a true defensive mid, but I think he would be a great signing for us.

I voted for two realstic ones. Flamini & Banega.
There are some I rate higher on the list but what is the point of voting for them? Never gonna happen.

I don't have any specific names however a good replacement doesn't necessarily have to be as good as Mascherano at breaking up play. I would rather have a player with a more rounded game and less of a specialist.

added some more on the Poll..

if we have 30 million to spend on a new midfielder i would suggest that most of those names could be convinced..

If we have £30M from Mascher sale, it's not for spending on a new midfielder, it's a new midfielder, left back, left wing and striker (possibly delete one of those last two for Jovanovanovanovanovanovovic

We'll have funds from the sales of Benayoun/Riera(?)/Babel(?)/fringe players too.

I picked Flamini and De Jong, the former of whom I think would be a realistic and reasonable option. De Jong may find himself surplus to requirements at City but it's debatable whether they would sell to us or whether he would want to come.

But our Danish scout doesn't rate him if I remember right. (Where is KHL when you need him anyway?)

what good did having the best DM in the world do us last season? and then what good is having a lesser option going to do in the future?

attacking teams need insurance for when their great players get forward. we have no such great players. replacing mascherano will be like taking out car insurance for a bicycle.

I voted Alonso but not a chance that it could happen, pity we didn't flog Masher and keep Alonso over the last few years.

If Gerrard decides he wants to go to Madrid we should try tempt them to do a swap deal with Alonso and build a team around him...again I know theres not a fucking chance of this but he is on the list so....

Realistically Lassana Diarra could be a very good replacement for Masher or on the cheap I'd like Mark Noble, not a defensive mid but could work with Gerrard

It did us plenty of good. Despite a ropey start, Masher was our best outfield player - by a mile - over the season as a whole. If it hadn't been for him we wouldn't even have the Europa Pot to look forward to. And we haven't lost Gerrard and Torres yet.

I'd rather not have the Europa pot to look forward to.

It's going to come as a very unwelcome distraction (an extra 20 odd games if we're successful) to our slim chances of getting back into the top four. PLay the kids and get knocked out early or be surprised.

I'm not totally convinced Christian Poulsen is the answer. He's a strong physical player and a good holding midfielder but he lacks the killer pass and the goal threat. I know masher isn't exactly the best in that department either but he's as good at least and then probably better in other aspects of the game.

That said he could be a very handy player. Better than Momo anyways.

All right then, put it another way - the blueslime would have finished ahead of us. Point is, without Masher we'd have been even further off the pace, probably by quite a margin.

I'm not sure I agree about the Europa thingy anyway. I see what you're saying, but (a) we need the money and (b) success breeds success. I hope some of the kids will get their chance next season in whichever competition.

What about Schweinsteiger? Unlikely he'd want to leave Bayern for us, I guess, but maybe he'd fancy the change/challenge? He's got the right physique and attitude for the PL. Decent shot too.

I was impressed with Mavuba when we played Lille. He was also very good for the french youth sides. Could be ready to take the step up now?

what you're saying to me is we need a £40m player for us to stay ahead of everton. i can't agree with that. if it is true then it's because of bad management and ridiculous tactics. id like to think next season the team will be managed better and then we can do without mascherano.

then again it's been a couple of days now. i'm pretty sure hodgson has completed his transformation from manager of the year into a complete and utter fucking retard just in time for pre season. yes, it is done.

Imagine? it would be great. As you say it would be difficult to get him but he looks to have stepped up a level since moving into the middle, probably the best player so far in the world cup

I don't actually think we're disagreeing that much here. What I'm saying is that we needed Masher LAST season to stay ahead of Everton. Like you, I don't think we should have had to, and I hope next season will be different.

Where we do differ is over supposedly not needing Masher next season. Most top teams have a midfield terrier these days, and they don't come any better than Masher. No player is indispensable, but without him every player we put out will have to defend more. It remains to be seen whether we can combine that with the more enterprising football we'll have to play in order to get anywhere in the Prem.

I would love to pair Essien with Gerrard because he can do it all but that's impossible. Banega is a good option. He is maturing and his game is improving.

He's one of those players I'd be genuinely excited about if we signed him. Unfortunately it doesn't look like we could get him, does it?
