So, Lille...

Just had a thought... If Kim Kallstrom played for them, would that mean he's Lille Kim?

Anyway, moving on.

So, same team as Monday night? That what poeple think/want?

I dunno. It'd be refreshing to see the winnning team given a chance to go again, but... Lille's attackers showed a propensity last week to drop deep into midfield to pick it up and run directly at us, which would fucking murder that system from Monday night, Rafa also usually favours Kuyt in Europe given his excellent goalscoring record, and I'd worry about us conceding. Ship 1 goal, and we've gotta score 3 folks. Le nightmare. Thus, I think it won't be the same team. God knows what he'll go with, but there'll be more defensive solidity to the side is my guess.

Whats yours?

Actually, just realised Maxi's cup-tied so it can't be the same team. Kuyt's in.

I should also add it'll be interesting to see how these Lillians go on a football pitch with grass.

I'd suspect:

----------------------Torres-----------------------
-----Babel----------Gerrard-----------Kuyt------
-----------------Aqulilani----
------------------------Masher----------------
------Insua---Carra----Agger------Johnson
---------------------Reina-----------------------

Riera could come in for Babel, but I doubt it.

The away goal factor's massive. Concede 1 goal and we're more or less out.

A good side would have scored against us on Monday night because there was time and space to be found in attacking us.

That would be a good team but i just cant see rafa going attack again. He will revert to his old ways!

----------------------Torres-----------------------
---Benayoun-----Gerrard-----------Kuyt------
----------------lucas---------Masher------------
------Insua---Carra----Agger------Johnson
---------------------Reina-----------------------

----------------------Torres-----------------------
-----Babel----------Gerrard-----------BENAYOUN
-----------------Aqulilani----
------------------------Masher----------------

---------------------Reina-----------------------

Why play Kuyt?

His passing game is too limited. He'd probably ruin every attacking move we make on current form.
Yossi is the right replacement.

They did. It was 4-1.

Fair point Ry.

I think regardless of Maxi being there (even though he was instrumental against Pompey) we're hopefully on an upward curve now and will continue where we left off, assuming Rafa doesn't make wholesale changes, which would be far too presumptuous.

I can't see that any other strategy than gung-ho is workable given that Lille hold the advantage.

To try and be cagey when all they need is 1 goal is very risky, better to try and exert pressure right from the get go and try for a 6 minute spell like the Pompey game.

For that reason I would continue with the Pompey set up with Kuyt's inclusion for Maxi.

I think we'll need the 3 goals and we should set out to achieve that.

Yep. OR even Yossi could come in for Maxi. One worry might be that Rafa tinkers with our left handside, given they were attacking that side quite well.

Given the side he just put out won and won well, given the fact that we need nothing less than a win, and given the fact that Lille are . . . well, Lille - you would hope the side would remain virtually unchanged with either Dirk coming in or Yossi given that when he plays on the right he's usually pretty useful, and Dirk's been fairly horrible lately.

The only other change I can think of that will make sense would be the mooted possibility of Agger at left back, but I don't expect Rafa to go for that.

I'm hoping for (and possibly even expecting) an old-school European Rafa performance where we come out of the blocks like greased lightning, smash seven shades of shit out of them in the first 20 minutes, then sit back and control the game when we're 3 up.

I'd be happy enough with that

This is very unfortunate.. Because it will switch our focus from securing that we get the game where we want it we will rather focus not letting them get that goal no matter what.

Yeah, I hope so too. Shock and awe - show Lil' Lille what Anfield on a European night is all about. They score one, we score three. Or four. Or five. Fuck fear and negativity. We should have gone for it more in the first leg, as I said at the time (away goals are king in Europe), but we didn't, so now we need to invoke that old Anfield magic, harness the huge confidence boost we got from the Portsmouth game, and play as many of the same players as we possibly can. I hope Aquilani gets over his sore tummy because he was ace against Portsmouth and I'd love to see him do the same thing again.

In the past such fist clenching calls to arms would make me think "yeah, let's show the rest of the footballing world who we are, that when the chips are down, we can show that we are still a force to be reckoned with." Now? Couldn't give a shit really.

Hmm Based on what we saw Monday a similar team should be able to score 4 if he had too.

Conceding 1 shouldn't knock us if play the same way.

Big if this season though.

No love for 'Lille Kim' then huh.

cos it's shit.

If he sets out to win, we'll fucking walk it.

If he tries to nullify the other team into a stupor, we'll lose.

Tough crowd.

What if Lille put in a drab performance after starting so well? The headlines could read "Lille Wane/Wayne".

Ba dum tisssssssssh!

in big cl matches under rafa weve been fairly spectacular at getting goals early doors when it counts, i dont expect this to be any different,

Well given that they're fifth in Ligue 1, I'd say they've put in plenty of drab perfomances so yea that's Lille to a T.

Or...
