I'm not anti smoking, I stopped smoking 30 years ago but could still have one at the drop of a hat. In fact I do indulge now and again in a small cigar - so in fact I have some sympathy.
I think the ban in enclosed public spaces had been mainly a good thing although it's closed down half the nations pubs and clubs.
The issue I have is mainly the demonising of smoking and the nanny state - we are all more than aware that smoking can, and does fuck you up, so we can make really well informed choices.
What has prompted this thought process the latest news as regards the proposed ban on smoking anywhere on NHS property.
Now I think turning up to the main entrance to the Royal to be confronted by a rag, tag and bobtail of smokers with various degrees of missing limbs and being plugged into intravenous drips does look a bit well , shit, so I think they should be given more dignity and have comfortable designated outside smoking areas within the hospital.
People point to the drain on the NHS by these fucking smokers but I now learn that smoking in terms of tax inc vat and duty brings in over £12bn to the exchequer whereas the cost of these bastards is £6bn and that is probably exaggerated for obvious reasons, so my suggested dedicated hospital smoking areas should be pretty plush to be honest.
Most smokers I know are far more relaxed calmer and laid back than none smokers so perhaps from a mental health perspective there is a bit of an NHS offset.
So let's manage this smoking thing a little more sympathetically- Yes?
