“You prepare your list of players and have No 1 target, No 2, then the third one,†Benítez says. “If you lose the first one, normally they’ve signed for another English club. If you lose them to your rivals, it’s worse. Every year you have to work very hard to be ready and sometimes another team gets there first. It is frustrating.â€

That frustration is underlined every time Gareth Barry, Florent Malouda or Nemanja Vidic turn out against Liverpool, but the loss of Aaron Ramsey to Arsenal is particularly galling.

Benítez had agreed a deal to sign the talented young midfield player from Cardiff City for a £1.5m initial fee, with a similar amount to follow, but the transaction stalled at board level before Arsenal came in with a £5m bid.

Where is this from?

The Ramsey thing has come up a few times now. Why? We don't go on about missing out on Alves or whoever.

cause he is utter class, also there is a difference between 13 million and 3 million

Yeah, no player Benitez had bought has got better under him. Agger, Torres and Carra were always awesome and actually better before they came here 😉

Agger seems to have stalled here, as he still puts in VERY solid performances at international level. Carra was always awesome, just played in bizarre positions. Torres is the only example who has improved

And Reina

And Gerrard

Reina was fantastic for villareal too, we just got a steal. And fair enough I'll give you gerrard, although he still probably would've progressed anyways as he has a natural talent
In conclusion, I exaggerated. Let's leave it at that

It would be interesting to know which players that Benitez had signed were really his 2nd or third choice players.

Gerrard was one of the best midfielders in the world before Benitez got here

The fact that he has excelled in other positions isn't a miracle

I do love it when divvies like Headwand use the 'goals' stats to show his 'improvement'

Like it's a fucking surprise that he scored more goals when played in a more advanced position

Fact is, I'd still play him further back in CM, because we're fucking shit there and he would be amazing with Masher

That requires a class partner for FT to be signed, though

When you remember the amount of money Benitez has been allowed to spend on the likes of Lucas, Dossena and Babel its difficult to have much sympathy.

I'd like to know more about the Ramsey thing.

When did we look to sign him ? Who else had we wasted money on at that time that could have better used on Ramsey ?

From what I remember playing Carra all over the place didn't help him and he was never as good at CB with GH anyway.

Every manager makes bad signings but lets not get into that, don't get the complete write off Babel. Still could get most of it back if we sold him now and his sparse conrtibutions have included some memorable highlights such as CL quarters agains Arsenal. Well I wouldn't put him in the same list as Lucas and Dossena anyway.
Regardless, it this story is true then a manager must be allowed to be able to manage his own trasnfer budget not overuled by 2 morons from US. If they don't trust his ability to handle it then they should have removed him. Would be intersting like Rosco said when this happened if it actually did...

I included Babel because he cost a lot and was unproven, much like Lucas.
I included Dossena because we bought him for a lot at a similar time to when Arsenal signed Ramsey I think.
