Can't believe people defended the shite that is our marking system, because its occasionally worked for three quarters of a season.

Its fucking shit, quite possibly the worst kept secret in football for the past 5yrs. Well now everyone knows. Take your brilliant marking system back to spain and fuck off.

but its the players not implemen.........

I agree

Ha, quite. Where've I heard that before? Oh.

zonal marking has never worked ,is not working, and wont ever work in the premiership .

its not the zonal marking, no one attacks the ball properly. also we need people on the posts

Right... so it's the zonal marking then. Nice one. If they're man marking then they're watching the player and atacking the ball, instead they're stood marking zones and waiting for the opposition player to run into their zone so they know who to pick up.

It's shite. And re the posts. We had Insua on the post when Tuncay put it over. The marking is rubbish.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Insua stand on the back post for all their corners?

don't think anyone is assigned to the posts consistantly. the goal I thought Carragher was closest to the post where the ball went in, noone else?

the point of zonal marking is that if everyone attacks the ball in their zone they either win the ball or make it difficult for the attacker to, they don't have to worry about being dragged around following a man or losing him. they should know their zone, in theory it should be easier than man marking. the zonal marking system isn't flawed in itself, but it seems we don't have the players to make it work

Either that or the coaching's not good enough.

Fair enough, the crux though is that its never worked consistently under Rafa, for whatever reason, and 5yrs on its the worst its ever been.

Yes, I was surprised Rafa used someone on the post...but this maybe due to Insua's feet being rooted to the ground as he attempts to jump.

Can't argue with that. 🙁

I was alongside you Mark in going on about our set-pieces. Clearly we're just listening to Sky and getting our opinions from there... Or not.

The bottom line is I woke up knowing one Stokes big, brick house players would get a goal off a set-piece today and voilà. And it doesn't matter which marking system you employ, if you replace tall players who can concentrate with small players who cannot, then you're going to be in trouble.

I agree to a degree Mark, but after losing Hyypia, Crouch, Sissoko and Riise. Leaves us with Insua, Masch and Lucas marking the opposition.

The 4 players guarding our area aren't good enough either, which means we concede silly goals.

The system works, we just don't have the right players anymore. Man marking could be the way to go, but when you look at the stats they concede about the same amount of goals.

Agree. But, if you mark one post you have to mark both, because the person on the one post plays the other team onside that is attacking the other one. You have to defend both or none.

And I would call marking a post (something that most teams do) as zonal marking. Many teams combine zonal and man-marking - which is what I would like to see - 3 defenders across the back marking zones (including both posts) and everyone else man marking. It means leaving a couple people unmarked on the outside of the box (usually on the far side) and if they receive the ball everyone rotates to apply pressure and man marks leaving their zones. It is not that bloody complicated and teams prove against us every bloody week.

Let me just point out that there's not even one bit of that sentence that's true.

I think one of the worst things I've heard Rafa go on about is how the reason we are shit at set pieces was because we replaced taller players with shorter players as if this wasn't his fault. It was the equivalent to him coming out and saying we didnt have enough pace in the game. He just doesn't understand the PL and how important height pace and strength are.
