[article]As the table shows, more goals are being scored from set pieces this season and it's partly due to the crackdown on grappling in the box.

The new rules make it more difficult to defend man for man as the defender is more accountable, so we're seeing more zonal defending.

It's clearly affecting teams' ability to defend set pieces, though, and Mark Hughes has admitted Stoke are struggling with the switch to a zonal system.[/article]

Rafa has the last laugh.

Klopp and Carra dissected our set-pieces at length at the MNF. Klopp said he did mostly man-for-man marking in Germany (not sure if he said Dortmund or Mainz, there was some noise that obscured the word) because there he had lots of tall players, so they usually dominated individual duels. But for LFC he has to "find creative solutions" such as using some players to block while the best headers play zonally and try to win the ball. He was also critical of Ragnar's defending in particular for the Hull goal, said he was too focused on the flight of the ball and didn't know what was going on around him.

I always thought that size is pretty much the most important factor for set-piece success. This is a part of the game where tactics and training go only so far compared to sheer physique. If/when Can wins back the starting spot we will have one more tall player compared to now, and if Can, Grujic and Origi can be all on the pitch at the same time, in addition to the 2 CBs, we could perhaps even dominate most opponents on set-pieces. Wijnaldum is a good jumper and header of the ball, but that's more useful in the attacking sense.

Updated after Swansea. I think Firmino's goal vs. Swans counts as open play even though it came right after a direct free-kick Coutinho put into the wall. If we remove penalties and direct free-kicks, our set piece score this season is 3:3.

Zonal marking implemented properly worked. We had an excellent defensive record under Rafa for the most part, but every time we conceded from a corner Andy fucking Gray would bleat on about zonal marking. I also wouldn't pay much attention to what Jamie Redknapp says about anything.
