Sergi Canos future: Liverpool teenager in contract stand-off after making debut

Sergi Canos made his Liverpool debut on Sunday but will leave unless the club agrees a new deal with him this summer

Spanish teenager Sergi Canos made his Liverpool debut on Sunday afternoon, but the midfielder’s Anfield future is still in doubt as contract talks drag on.
Canos played the last nine minutes of Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday, which he described afterwards as “a dream come true” and “the best 10 minutes of my life”. 19-year-old Canos had returned to Liverpool last weekend after an impressive season on loan at Brentford in the Championship.

But Canos’ current Liverpool contract has just one year left to run and the two parties are currently some way apart on terms for a new deal. Liverpool have so far offered him a new deal on £3,000 per week, which is one third of what he could hope to command if he left. Liverpool are currently trying to keep their wage bill down for young players, an approach that cost them Jordan Rossiter, who agreed a move to Rangers last week. This new club policy could see Canos leave as well.

If Canos does not agree a new long-term contract at Anfield then Liverpool will have little option but to sell him, as he would still bring in a fee of at least £1million if he made a permanent transfer this summer.

Brentford are keen on signing him permanently, after he made 38 Championship appearances and scored seven goals for them. Reading and Fulham have also enquired about him.

Rangers, who are back in the Scottish Premier League next season, are also keen on Canos, having just signed Rossiter for a compensation fee of only £250,000. Rangers' new head of recruitment Frank McParland spent 14 years working at Anfield, as chief scout then as academy director.

If Canos sees out the last year of his contract next season he can join a foreign side with Liverpool only receiving limited training compensation, rather than a fee set by a tribunal. With Spanish sides Eibar and Sporting Gijon interested in signing him this way, Liverpool will have to either secure Canos’ future this summer or sell him.

Seriously?
I'm not too fussed to be honest, could be because of the upcoming final and the potential signings we're making but I rate the lad and I hope he stays but it's gonna be a steep uphill battle for him considering the level of talent we could potentially have in the first team.

Trying to save money on young players' salaries seems like a daft idea to me. They are so minuscule compared to senior player that you're not saving much anyway – but you might lose some seriously talented youngsters for next to nothing, as we already seem to be doing.

The idea of offering lots of incentives built into the deal is fine - that should indeed keep them hungry - but you also have to look closely at the market and be realistic in what wages you offer. This summer we might have Frank McParland at Rangers, Rafa at Newcastle and possibly Brendan at Swansea, amongst others, trying to lure a few of our young players away and we can't afford to lose the initiative.

Another tragic end to the pool of promising teenagers we spent countless hours of scouting and sums of money to bring in.

We spend so much money to invest in a youth only to let him go for a paltry sum. Someone has to teach the clowns in our club about the meaning of profit, loss and ROI.

3000 per week is a lot for us plebs..but it's a pretty shitty amount in the current market for young footballers with potential. If we don't feel they are good enough we should look to offload them early with large sell on clauses and buy back options.

I imagine luring young players nearing the end of their contacts will become common practice for smaller European teams. Scotland should be all over it considering the tiny amount of compensation they need to pay English clubs. Tapping up players agents early and offering to triple wages and first team time must be an attractive option.

If I was Rangers/Celtic I'd target the top 6...so many players fighting for positions that get filled by the next big expensive signing. So many would be swayed by a bumper pay packet.

I agree. Our youngster isn't idiots. They see how much more money we earn on the TV deal. They want their share. Offer them £10k a week and loan them out instead if they aren't good enough for the first team yet. £3k a week was good enough a couple of years ago but isn't now because of the much better TV deal.
