From today's edition of El Observador of Uruguay:

Coates, from dream to disappointment

The centre back arrived to England in 2011 as the best defender in the Uruguayan league, but is now paying his dues: he trains, doesn't play, asked Liverpool's authorities to go on a loan and was denied

How does it feel to train all week and not play?
It's complicated, but every player has to go through this, and you have to train as best as possible so that you don't waste any opportunity given.

Have you talked in the club, with Liverpool's manager?
Yes, yes, in this transfer window there was a possiblity to go out on a loan to some teams, but the club said I couldn't. It also means something, and that is that they still keep me in mind.

Did you insist? Do you want to play, to go out?
I want to play, mostly because of everything that is coming with the national team, where every Uruguayan player wants to be. With that in mind, that's why I want to play, be it on Liverpool or elsewhere.

What do you do during weekends? It must be frustrating to train every day and have free weekends.
I haven't been in many games, but in others I've been on the bench. In any case, I almost always travel with the team and I'm left out on the same day. But you have to be ok, keep a cool head, train well, and wait for the opportunity.

Does this situation piss you off, as Uruguayans say? *
Yes, like anyone would be. It's difficult, but that's why say that one has to handle it he best possible way, so that the manager sees that one is willing to train well and work hard to be there.

* [Translator's note: "calentar" (to heat up) is Uruguayan slang for getting angry or pissed off]

Do you find an explanation for this?
No, I don't know. That's something to talk with the manager. All I have to care about is to be fit and and then wait.

How long is your contract with Liverpool?
I'm here until 2016. But we'll see what happens with my future. I have to wait until the transfer window and talk with the club.

Three years is a long time to wait. Have you set yourself a limit for your exit if you are not taking into consideration?
I don't have an exit date, because you have to analyze any incoming offer. Suppose one arrives from a very important club, but I don't have the opportunity that I could get here in Liverpool, so it's better to stay...

Have you talked with your father about leaving Liverpool?
We have, but like I said, it's up to the offers.

Is it the first time that this happens to you?
Since I began in First Division, yes. That's why one takes it differently, because if I was older I might have already gonoe through a situation like this. But this being the first time makes it complicated.

Tabarez (Uruguay's manager) has spoken many times with footballers who couldn't play in their teams. Has he made you any suggestion?
The message is the same for everyone, which is that it is better to be playing. He knows my situation, though. I have the advantage of age because I have plenty of time ahead of me.

At a certain point, there was speculation about interest from Brazil. Would you be seduced by that possiblity, or would you prefer to stay in Europe?
In truth, what matters is not what one would like, but the the sport project presented to you. If the offer seduces me, I have no trouble.

Does that mean that returning to America would not be a step back?
Not at all. I think that Nicolas (Lodeiro) went to play in Brazil, and thanks to that he is in the national team. It's not a step back; so long as one plays it doesn't matter the place.

The fifth Beatle
Sebastian Coates shares life in Liverpool with the team's idol, his national team's mate Luis Suarez. Asked by El Observador what it means the presence of the striker in the team and the city, Coates answered: "Luis is a figure in Liverpool, a star. The club is very identified with Luis and he is very happy. The city also loves him. He is doing everything well, and that's why people idolize him." When it's time to go out for dinner or shopping with his teammate, Coates revealed that there are no inconvenients. "People there do not bother you, don't invade privacy, though they want a picture like anyone elsewhere. Truth is, the city respects him a lot and let him live his life in peace," said the Celeste defender.

The lad just needs to PLAY. Regularly. Then you can judge. He's got potential, at this stage some aspects of his game look good and others look shaky, but he really needs regular matches to show how much he can improve.

It is disappointing that's he's been frozen out.

Who knows what's going on behind the scenes though. Perhaps his attitude isn't as great as he is making out there... although the bad apples tend to like to mouth off too.

It'd be nice to see him get a couple games before the season ends. It's not like we have much left to play for pride aside.

He hasnt done himself any favours when he's been given a chance though.
He's like the lion in the Wizard of Oz. For such a big lad he should be much more aggressive and dominant in the air.
I'd loan him out next season.

He's played close to the number of games he's had last season and frankly for me, not impressed me. Maybe he could've had more games but he was also part of the sloppy defences that saw us knocked out in both domestic cup competitions, so there. Young guys trying to break into the squad or the starting rotation have to seize their chances and quickly demonstrate their ability when they get the irregular chances to play. When you get a chance, you have to seize it, do well so that you get re-invited. Then do well again, and so on, until you build the manager's trust.

Pacheco is an example of a youngster who more often than not looked bland when he got senior games in these few seasons. Kelly, on the other hand, impressed initially and built on his good starts. You've got to show a few times that you could realize your potential.

He was always going to be behind Skrtel and Agger this season, with the pair being more experienced and known quantities. Maybe he should've been named to the bench more often earlier in the season at Carra's expense, but that was again unlikely to happen in Carra's final season. In any case, Carra's string of recent starts, while not stellar, have still been okay. Given that Rodgers cited needing leadership and organizational ability at the back, it was always unlikely that Coates was going to get ahead of Carra.

Not sure what the future holds for him, but I'm still yet to be convinced by him in his rare appearances. He's still young, maybe he'll get chances next season with Carra gone and Skrtel likely on the way out, but we also have Kelly and Wisdom who could eventually become understudies in the position, so I'm not really too fussed about him leaving at this point.

He'd be boss in the Italian league I reckon whilst playing regularly.
He looks a yard short in every aspect of his game at the moment which is probably why he hasn't made the breakthrough but he needs to be given a chance considering how awful our defenders have been recently.

It's bizarre that he's just not getting a look in.

The one massive weakness we have is that we are so weak aerially. The season is over now so just get him in, even if its to put him in the shop window.

An old but interesting piece.

Abstract:

In every game they played in last year's World Cup Uruguay had less possession than their opponents but more shots. During the Copa they made sure they pulled back still deeper, swapping striker Edinson Cavani for yet another hard working midfielder.

It was, then, a good tournament for a young centre-back to find his international feet.

Coates could defend deep, with Diego Perez and Egidio Arevalo Rios snapping into tackles in front of him - and the magnificent Diego Forlan-Luis Suarez partnership to win the game at the other end.

Coates is now about to team up with Suarez once more, but this time the circumstances are very different. Liverpool's quest is to win enough games to get into the top four, or even mount a title challenge.

It means that, if called upon, Coates will be asked to defend much higher up the field, with much less protection in front of him, in a context where everything is happening much more quickly than anything he has ever been used to in his young career.

It is a step up that proved far too big for a South American centre-back previously signed by Liverpool - Gabriel Paletta, who came to Anfield soon after helping Argentina win the 2005 World Youth Cup.

Paletta has gone on to prove himself in European football, coming back from a serious knee injury to enjoy a solid debut season in Italy with Parma. He is a strong, rugged defender - had he waited until now for a move to Liverpool he might have done better.

But as I argued in this space five years ago, swapping Banfield in the Argentine league for Liverpool in 2006 was dangerously premature.

He definitely has potential. He a good defender when he's on form. Yes, he has made some awful mistakes, but at his age, with PROPER coaching, that will soon be knocked out of him. The truth is, we haven't seen enough of the guy to be fair judges. Mistakes aside, we've seen some flashes of brilliance from him. He's already scored a goal, (a fucking cracker it was too) in very few appearances. And for a centre back, I find that very encouraging.

Let me put it this way; right now, I'd take him over Skrtel, no question. At least he looks like he WANTS to play. And when Carra retires, we should seriously think about getting him into the first team.

Not had one good game in Liverpool shirt.

Worth sending him out on loan to a team like WBA/Norwich/Reading to see if he can cut it in England.

Not really, he has mistake a game, type of defender.

Maybe be harsh but so far, his performances remind me of titus, hence a loan out to another club may do him good.

I know another defender who used to be like that. Later on he became one of the best defenders in the league.

He's clearly not benefiting from just being in the squad and sitting on the bench. He's turning 23 this yr. The likes of Skrtel and Agger joined at 23 and 21 respectively and subsequently managed to break into the starting XI in the next season or two. We had the core of Hyypia and Carra to rely on and were able to bed them in nicely. We were relatively much more stable defensively and as a club then as compared to now. Probably explains why less 'risk'/trust is taken on giving him a chance. It was Comolli who tracked him for 2 yrs before signing him so we'd never know how highly the likes of Dalglish, Hodgson and Rodgers really rated him. Managerial changes and deferring style of play probably hasn't helped too. Skrtel's consistency last season and Agger's improved 'luck' with injuries these 2 seasons kinda blocked his way of getting a sustained run of games to break into the lineup. Considering its almost certain that the next (2?) CB signings will probably be in the more experienced mould, things look even more bleak for him.

Tbh, I doubt he'll make it at Anfield. Not doubting his talent as a player but the circumstances and timing just doesn't seem right. If we can recoup back on the amount we spent on him and spend it on someone who's going to make a bigger contribution to the squad next season, I'll be all for it.

Just give him the last 9 games.
Every game.
See how he fares.
I reckon hed be beastmaster general but he needs a chance.

Yeah, centre back is as much about your understanding with the players around you as it is individual ability. Playing occasionally is never going to work.

Throw him in for a run of games and see what we have, he can't be any worse than what's ahead of him.

Not really, he has mistake a game, type of defender.

Maybe be harsh but so far, his performances remind me of titus, hence a loan out to another club may do him good.
One mistake doesn't make a bad game. And remember, he has youth on his side. Agger and Skrtel make one mistake at the very least per game, and they're both experienced enough to know better.

At the very least we might score from more than 3 corners a year with this big dashing hunk of Uraguayan beef in the team.
He could shite a full grown Skrtel.
