My Liverpool future is in the club's hands, says Ryan Babel

• Dutch winger frustrated by lack of regular first-team football
• 'It is not up to me whether I see my future here'

Share17 John Ashdown guardian.co.uk, Friday 17 December 2010 00.06 GMT

Ryan Babel has refused to rule out a January departure from Liverpool, saying his future is in the hands of the club.

The Dutch winger was an £11.25m signing from Ajax in 2007 but has started only 31 Premier League games in over three years with the club. That patchy playing record saw the 23-year-old offered to Sunderland last January and it seems the Anfield exit door could be open for Babel again next month.

"It doesn't annoy me that I always get asked about my future," he said. "It is not up to me whether I see my future here, it is up to Liverpool. This is my fourth season so it is up to them what they do.

"I have one more year at the end of the season on my contract. I would like to stay. It has been frustrating here as a player, but it has not changed my loyalty to the club. It is more to the manager. The club is fantastic. But if a manager does not like you it is between you and the manager. The club is amazing and there are still a lot of fans who believe in me so that gives me a goal."

The Dutch winger, though, does seem to be enjoying life more under Roy Hodgson than under his predeccessor Rafael Benítez. "They are different," he said. "He [Hodgson] does things differently, and maybe that suits me better. When he arrived he was closer with the team, talking to players, maybe that gives the players a boost to respond better. He is more involved day to day with the players. He does things differently. Under Rafa the assistant managers took a lot of responsibility but that is different now.

"I hope this country has not seen the best of me yet. The maximum games I have played in a row is four and it is difficult for every player to find that consistency if you are not playing every week."

Alright so he didn't really say he was shit, but he may as well have.

i think things would have been very different for him if he had gone to Arsenal..

He does have talent but he is a broken man. Very little fight and in need of a full time sports psych..

id be very happy to see the back of him. Imagine a player with Carra's determination and proffesionalism with the speed and ability of Babel -

He only has himself to blame.

He moans about only playing 4 games in a row, after putting in a dire performance like the one on Wednesday. His first touch was worse than I've ever seen it (and that's saying something).

He hasn't had a run because there's no in between with him. He can't string together performances and when he's shit he's really shit.

Fucking hell, you know the excitement on here when cisse, crouch etc score for their new clubs and we should never have sold them etc... it'll be a million times worse with babel.

Crazy stat.

He's never played more than four games consecutively.

Babel is a talented but also thick as two planks, which is exactly why he needs a run of games and some proper man management and coaching to nurture his talent.

He's utterly fucking braindead. I don't think I've ever seen a more stupid footballer. Pace, power, decent shot, and strength. But he has no idea how to play football.

It's why even at the age of 24 he still doesn't have a position. Because he has no clue how to play properly in one. He picks up the wrong positions, can't find himself space, has no idea how to use his pace to his advantage, takes too many touches too often, and is dreadful in quick interchange play.

He's fucking balls and I was through with him a long time ago.

yay! good for you ryan 🙂

I will add though babel isn't the only one in the squad that is brain dead, there are many others who dwell on the ball, don't make obvious passes, don't make obvious runs, have no fucking clue how to position themselves when defending that's why moves are constantly breaking down in attack and why we get opened up time and time again in defense. this of course doesn't excuse babel's cluelessness but let's not make out he is alone in the 'brain dead' room.

if you look at the goals babel has scored since being at liverpool he obviously has talent he just doesn't have the footballing brain to make use of that talent.

I think 90% of those were mistakes, he was running so fast the ball got in the way of his toe.

Anita - good idea. Unless he really is as thick as we think, and he only understands text speak and gansta rap.

I don't think things would have been different at the Arse, nor does Wenger, who was watching him long before we were but never took the plunge to sign him, and now we know why not. I don't think he'd have put up with Babel's brainless immaturity as long as we have TBH.

Liverpool's Ryan Babel rapping (ENGLISH TRANSLATION!)[/url]

His best performance since the debut season..

I think there's more videos of Babel rapping on youtube than of him playing football. 😱

Ryan Babel has received an official apology from FC Utrecht for the way their fans abused his mother.

The Dutch club were visitors to Anfield on Thursday night for their Europa Cup tie. Utrecht fans baited Babel with chants about his mother being a whore.

Babel said: “It was not nice for me. I know why they did it. It has everything to do with the fact that I have an Ajax background.

“Ajax is the biggest rival club of Utrecht. Although I have left there four years ago and class myself as a real Liverpool player, they see it differently.’’

Utrecht chairman Jan Willem van Dop said: “I contacted Dirk Kuyt, who used to be a Utrecht player, for Ryan’s details. Once I got them I wrote to Ryan and offered him our apologies. Stuff like that should not be said by our fans.â€

Skysports.com understands Liverpool have rejected a loan offer from Birmingham City for Ryan Babel.

Birmingham have been long-term admirers of the Holland international and tried to sign Babel during the last January transfer window.

A summer move to St Andrews was again mooted for the attacker, while Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United were also showing an interest in the 24-year-old.

Babel has continued to struggle to make an impression at Anfield and has started only one Premier League game for Liverpool this season.

With the transfer window set to reopen, Babel's future has again come under scrutiny, with Birmingham making a fresh attempt to sign the former Ajax youngster.

Blues boss Alex McLeish is keen to add a more incisive element to his squad next month and tried to bring in Babel on a temporary basis.

However, it is understood to have been rejected by the Reds as McLeish's counterpart Roy Hodgson seeks to keep his current squad intact.

Sell please.

Although the threads every time he scores once he leaves about us never giving him a chance, or how he's got great potential we never utilised will be quite frustrating.
