DATE OF BIRTH
February 18, 1992

SWANSEA CITY target Rory Donnelly is yet to decide where his future lies, with up to 14 clubs in the hunt for his signature.

Brendan Rodgers went to Ireland to watch the sought-after Cliftonville striker in the County Antrim Shield final against Glentoran on Tuesday night and is now weighing up a move for the youngster.

The Swans boss faces competition from a host of Premier League clubs including Liverpool and Chelsea for Donnelly, who has already scored 14 goals this season.

“Rory is a boy who is a talent,” said Rodgers.

“With the January window coming up it was something we thought we may need to make an early decision on.”

League One outfit Brentford have lodged two bids with Cliftonville for the 6ft 2in forward and could start a bidding war between clubs on this side of the Irish channel.

Everton, Sunderland and Queens Park Rangers have all had scouts at recent Cliftonville games. Despite looking destined for a January move, Donnelly says he remains focused on helping his side lift the Irish League title for the first time since 1998.

Donnelly said: “I’m not concentrating on all that talk.

“I’m concentrating on my game and helping the team.

“Whenever the time comes to make a decision on my future. I’ll turn my thoughts to it then.

“We have great players here at the club who are teaching me a lot of things, so all I can do is keep working hard."

Cliftonville manager Tommy Breslin doesn’t expect young starlet Rory Donnelly to have his head turned by recent transfer speculation.

A host of English sides have registered their interest in the 19-year-old and the club last night confirmed that they have received a firm offer for the player — but Breslin believes his hot-shot striker will simply get on with his game.

“That’s just the way Rory is,” said Breslin.

“He keeps his head down, trains well and it’s just business as usual as far as he’s concerned.

“He’s a good kid with no airs or graces about him and he just loves playing football so I don’t think transfer talk is going to distract him.

“Over the weekend, a club came in and asked us about the possibility of taking him on trial but that’s not something we’re interested in.

“If someone wants any of our players then they should make us a firm offer and we’ll consider it.”

And that is exactly what Cliftonville’s management committee will be doing in a scheduled board meeting this evening after receiving an official approach, but chairman Gerard Lawlor insists it’s important that any deal is good for both player and club.

“We’ve had a firm offer and others could be on the cards because a lot of clubs have made inquiries,” he explained.

“We'll sit down and discuss it as a board and we'll also be talking to Rory.

“He has been attracting a lot of attention and, though we would not want to stand in his way of making a move to the full-time game, we have plenty of things to consider.

“The team are in a good position in the league, have a County Antrim Shield final coming up and we’re also into the semi-finals of the League Cup. Rory has been an integral part of us reaching that level and so, from a footballing point of view, we want to keep him here.”

Donnelly, who hit the headlines with a devastating hat-trick to dump Linfield out of the County Antrim Shield last month, was the name on everyone’s lips again when he bagged an incredible long-range strike against the same opposition 10 days later and was back on the spotlight on Saturday with another treble in Cliftonville’s 7-3 defeat of Ballymena United — although he claims he scored four.

“Rory and Barry Johnston are having a bit of a debate over the fifth goal,” explained Breslin.

“The ball has come into the middle and Rory’s got the shot away but Barry insists he got the final touch before it went into the net, so I’ll let them sort that one out between themselves.”

Television replays show Johnston diverting the ball beyond United keeper Wayne Drummond but referee Mark Courtney’s report credits Donnelly with the goal — taking his tally for the campaign to 14.

“He’s done very well all season,” adds the Solitude boss.

“We have a lot of competition for places up front so the players know they have to be on top form because there’s at least one other person waiting to take their place in the team.

“Everyone has risen to that challenge and Rory’s no different. I don’t think he could learn off anyone better than Chris Scannell and, in turn, I think Chris is benefiting from having Rory playing up there alongside him.”

Scored a hattrick yesterday. 10 league goals in 15 matches

Who was the last Irish League player to make it big in the EPL?

He means northern Irish league player Ken.

And I'm fucking stumped if I can think of one.

Kevin Doyle? He was a League of Ireland player. There's two "top flights" in Ireland. I'm using the term top flight very loosely here as the standard in both isn't the best! The Irish League consists of teams from N.I while League of Ireland is mainly teams from The Rep.

I can't think of one. This lad looks to have serious potential. He should sign for the Glens.

The Cock and Hens eh? If he is any good he should get out of the Irish League sharpish!

Got one!

Damien Johnson, captained Birmingham for a few years. I'm sure he left Portadown to go to someone in the premier league. I played with and against him at underage level.

I'm kidding! There is no way this lad is staying in the Irish league.

Ahh, yes- decent player, actually. I'm sure you tortured him like.

When I say "played against him" I obviously mean 'sat on a bench and watched him play'.

I must make a point of going to go see him live. Word of caution though, Peter Thompson scored a hell of a lot of goals here and looked too good for this league. Went to Stockport and pretty much flopped. The step up is massive.

Although this kid does look to have something, it would be pointless for him to go straight to a premier league club.

Damien Johnson was on Blackburns books since he was about 14 he never played Irish league. Played on the same team as him, even though he was a year younger he stood out a mile, Was a quality player.

Think Michael Hughes played a while for Carrick, the only other player I can think of is Peter Kennedy who went from Portadown to Watford.

Some are these were/are PL players, some aren't but alot of them have certainly carved out a decent career for themselves after leaving the Irish League.

Joe Bambrick (Glentoran & Linfield)
Billy Bingham (Glentoran)
Danny Blanchflower (Glentoran)
Peter Doherty (Glentoran)
Harry Gregg (Coleraine)
Bryan Hamilton (Lisburn Distillery & Linfield)
Allan Hunter (Coleraine)
Pat Jennings (Newry Town)
Jimmy McIlroy (Glentoran)
Martin O'Neill (Lisburn Distillery)
Michael O'Neill (Chimney Corner & Coleraine)
Bertie Peacock (Coleraine & Glentoran)
Nigel Worthington (Ballymena Utd)
Tommy Wright (Linfield)

More recently...

Chris Baird (Ballymena Utd)
Stuart Elliott (Glentoran)
Jeff Hughes (Larne)
Michael Hughes (Carrick Rangers)
Peter Kennedy (Glenavon & Portadown)
Andy Kirk (Glentoran)
Glen Little (Glentoran)
Gareth McAuley (Crusaders & Coleraine)
Niall McGinn (Dungannon Swifts)
Bryce Moon (Coleraine)
Ivan Sproule (Omagh & Institute)

Mal Donaghy
Jim Hagan (although he made it more overseas).

Did Michael Hughes actually at for Carrick. What a cunt if he did. People from Larne shouldn't do that sort of shit. He's a dirty manc supporter as well.

Swansea have also been linked with a move for Cliftonville striker Rory Donnelly, and Rodgers confirmed the club have made a bid, believed to be around £100,000, for the 19-year-old.

"The club have made an offer and we are waiting to find out," he said.

"We can only do what we always do, try and get an agreement with them and once we get that it gives us a chance to speak to the player.

"He is a talented boy and Cliftonville have been fantastic recently, they won 13 games in a row and won the County Antrim Shield which I saw the other week.

"There are a lot of talented players in Northern Ireland and he is another one of them."

He'll never play for Liverpool. In fact he'll never play in the Premier League.
[/quote]

Maybe not for Liverpool but he's still got time to make it to PL football surely.

Swansea City are closing in on the capture of Rory Donnelly after their undisclosed bid for the young striker was accepted by Cliftonville.

The 19-year-old, who is currently Cliftonville's top scorer in Northern Ireland's Carling Premiership, has reportedly been attracting interest from a number of English sides.

Swans boss Brendan Rodgers recently saw the teenage prospect in action and the Premier League outfit have confirmed they will now negotiate personal terms with the player.

"I'm pleased to we now have a written agreement with Cliftonville over the possible transfer of Rory Donnelly," Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins told the club's official website.

"However, we are yet to finalise terms with the player. That's the next process."

Swansea manager Rodgers added: "Rory is a boy who is a talent."

Cliftonville chairman Gerard Lawlor says he would be sad to see Donnelly leave the club but admitted that Swansea's offer was a good deal for all parties.

"It's with a heavy heart that we have decided to accept Swansea's bid. But we can't stand in Rory's way," Lawlor said.

"It's a good deal for the club and for the player and I would personally like to place on record my sincere thanks to Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins for the respect he has shown our club throughout this process.

"In addition, and assuming Rory is able to agree terms, all at Cliftonville FC would like to wish him all the best in his future career."

I went to University and played football with Gerry Carlile. He's an absolute fucking mentalist.
