French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand was "stunned" to hear about Polanski's arrest, his office said, adding President Nicolas Sarkozy was following the case and hoped the matter could be resolved, allowing Polanski to return to his family.

I'm "stunned" that a French Minister would stick up for a man who plead guilty to raping a 13 year old girl. He was charged with more than that (rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious act upon a child under 14, and furnishing a controlled substance (methaqualone) to a minor.) but entered a plea bargain for a lesser crime. He fled the US before being sentenced.
