Although I posted this elsewhere I thought this worthy of it's own thread :-

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says his team will still be challenging for the title at the end of the season following Sunday’s 5-3 win over Stoke City.

The victory was the Reds’ first Premier League win at the Britannia Stadium and lifts them back into fourth place in the table, just five points behind leaders Manchester City.

Speaking after the match Rodgers suggested Liverpool’s fixture list for the rest of the campaign makes the strong candidates to fight for the title.

"When asked if anything was possible this season, Rodgers told reporters: "Yes, absolutely. We entered into the game today, 18 games to go, nine at home, nine away, knowing seven of those nine away were against teams in the bottom half.

“That doesn't mean they are gimmes by any means – it is a very tough league – but certainly we have shown enough that we are going to be challenging and that is all we ever wanted to be.

“We never stated we are going to win the league, to jump from where we have been at, we just needed to be in the conversation."
_________

So a quick check on what those remaining Away Games are :

WBA, Fulham, Southampton, United, Cardiff, West Ham, Norwich, Palace. Although there are teams there that will be scrapping for their PL lives I prefer that than trips to teams in the Top 8 !

I believe we can beat anyone at home (and mostly will) so the picture is looking rosier and rosier. Oncy's Army on the march perhaps.

we could, but we could just as easily finish 7th, its a mental season

It is. But you must still take games played and to come into consideration as they can tilt the picture slightly. We have played virtually all the toughest teams away from home now and have 9 home and 8 away to go. The scales are tipping.

So you're not considering a game at OT as tough one anymore? 😉

I think the Holiday games proved we're not just there yet - so let's focus on staying within striking distance of Arsenal and hopefully that gives us a good shot for a top 3 finish.

We can talk (in the conversation) and dream of the title but we will fall short. Man City and Chelsea will start to pull away. Dunno about Arsenal....
But then what do I know?

That means our home games are tougher though.

It means that we've already played (most of) the top teams away and are still only 6 points off the top with them yet to come to Anfield to receive their due 😉

Haha yeah. Somehow though I am not too convinced that playing at home means we have a higher change of beating them. I hope we win; failing which I hope the top teams take points off each other.

I think we're getting a bit carried away if we take the OT game lightly.

We have a tendency to bring out the best in lower clubs.

Maybe we shouldn't take it lightly, but it is a fact that we've a better record at OT than at the Brittania stadium. It is also true that Moyes has lost 4 from 17 home games (where Stoke have lost just 1 home game before yesterday). OT isn't a fortress. We can go there with more confidence than perhaps at any time in 24 years.

I think we'll lose both away games to Southampton and United, but it's okay as I feel we'll do very well in the other fixtures.

We really let ourselves down against Southampton, so I really hope we go there looking to put that result right.

We did, but Southampton always seem to have the making of us, they're a fantastic team who do the pressing game much better than we do, and it always gets us.

Look at the side we fielded against them:

  • 22 Mignolet
  • 04 Toure
  • 05 Agger (Jose Enrique - 57' )
  • 17 Sakho
  • 37 Skrtel (Alberto - 72' )
  • 08 Gerrard
  • 09 Aspas (Sterling - 46' )
  • 12 Moses
  • 14 Henderson
  • 21 Lucas
  • 15 Sturridge
No Suarez back yet and 4 central defenders (what in the name of good fuck was BR thinking?). Aspas and Moses! Together. In the same team! We are a LOT better than that side now. We'll fucking hammer Southampton away. @Dirty Sanchez will tell you that too.

Top four, yes. The league, not this season, but if we get top four and keep Luis as well as spending a few bob thanks to the champs league dough, then in the next few seasons for sure.

I just really hope we make top 4, as pathetic as that sounds in this day and age. I think it will be really tough, as Everton are looking great at the moment, but yesterday's result was a great one.

Jones in goal. Downing. Allen at his least confident. We'll smash them.

They showed that we were bummed by officials out of 3 points from 6 in our, arguably, two toughest away fixtures for the season, against title-contending rivals.

Indeed, and im not delighted that Rodgers has piped up about being contenders just from the jinxy side of things but I didn't realise our aways were as they are and judging by how dangerous we are up front and beating bogey teams... its exciting alright...

Of course not only do we have to make sure we make the proverbial hay while The Lying Rag shines away from home but we will need to knock the big boys out at home too... Its a tall fucking order.

But then Suarez and Sturridge... WOW...

Fucking right he will.
All you sorry bastards who can't sleep at the thought of playing Southampton. . . I have nothing but pity for you.
