Rigobert Song

Horrible news.

There can be some amazing recoveries even from a severe stroke, but it's pot luck and equally likely to lose a lot of function even if he pulls through.

He played for us when I first saw Liverpool live away at Coventry. I remember he had his dreadlocks raised up high in some elaborate fashion and the Coventry fans were singing 'He's got a pineapple. On his head he's got a pineapple".

It's a shit anecdote, but my Rigobert Song library is pretty slim.

A song popularised by Baddiel and Skinner for that Forest player.....er.....Jason someone. He was rubbish.

Jason Lee....................one of those "how the fuck did he ever become a professional footballer" types.

The classic "journeyman" player. I bet he played for loads of clubs. I always felt a bit sorry for him. He didn't really merit the attention and abuse he got.

He sorta did deserve some of the abuse though because he was stupid enough to say that he hated the "pineapple/hair" song and wanted people to stop singing it, and all that did was make the fans sing it more often and louder. Also, he could have (as he ended up doing) change his hairstyle if he hated the song so much. The same with Dave Kitson when he was at Reading who said it annoys him when the fans sing songs about his ginger hair.....what did he think the fans would do? He went blonde pretty soon after.

Edit: Oh and it goes without saying I hope Rigobert makes a full recovery, not the best player ever to don the red shirt but he seemed like a bit of a character.

Not exactly fair, he was the Kevin Phillips of his day, tearing it up scoring for fun, then like Brendan said, took loads of abuse from B&S then the media. Then the goals dried up.

Back on topic - Terrible news regarding Rigobert Song, hope he makes a good recovery.

No he wasn't. He barely ever got into double figures.

I saw Jason Lee playing (allegedly) for Peterborough once. He was dire. The only thing which made him worth watching was that monstrosity on his head.

GWS though, obv.

I think he did start off well then the chant started and his form took a nose dive.
I think Beckham (and others) had it worse; what would you rather hear from 40,000 fans; that you have a pineapple on your head or that yer wife takes it up the arse? Any perceived loss of "form" had more to do with him being quite shite.

Ive had the misfortune of seeing the dud play for a few different sides , wierdly.

He bounced around sides in the southern division of the evo stick for the best part of a decade , doing absolutely nothing

I don't argue that, my memory tells me he started off good but then was shite.

If you paid me the amount of money a professional footballer gets (even the relatively modest amount he was probably on) I would be able to take ANY abuse. I would probably get some sort of perverse kick out of it actually...

If you google Rigobert Song, you can take your choice as to whether he is alive or dead.

I have good memories of him - his ventures upfield were always entertaining. However his colleagues in the Cameroon team nicknamed him "The German" because to them, he was an exceptionally disciplined defender.
