Realistic Expectations For Next Season

So what's yours? What is going to happen over the summer? And giving the disasters of last season, what's going to be an acceptable finish in the league?

They certainly have picked up a notch

i'm expecting better than 7th

I'm still hoping for Kenny's appointment as interim boss. Acceptable finish IMO has to be top four, which we had the talent to have reached last season but pissed away for various reasons.

Its going to be very difficult to get back in that top 4 no? With Mascherano to probably leave, amongst other squad players, I don't see like for like replacements. The team will probably be weakened further. 6th.

Then again I hope the Arab does buy the club, and pump in shitloads of money and bring us back to the top.

Battle for 4th
1/4 final FA cup
Winner Milk cup
1/4 eurjoker league

But then it depends on which manager we get, players leaving/coming in..

Masher will indeed be a massive loss, but IMO between Stevie, Torres, Pepe, Johnson, Maxi and Jovanovic - plus some good youngsters and hopefully some other signings - we should have enough to get back into the CL spots, especially if we have the good sense to appoint the King and give the whole club a stratospheric lift.

Top 4. Its vital we get back in there next season and should concentrate on that even if it means disregarding everything else.

1 season out of the CL is more than enough.

Kenny to take the reigns.
Mascherano, Babel, Degen, Riera to exit.
Jovanovic, Turan and Noble to join
6th place finish.
No cups.
No stadium.
Same owners.

It's pointless predicting which players will come in when we do not know the manager. Whoever does come in should be expected to: a) convince our best players, most notably Gerrard and Torres, that their future lies at this football club; b) get this side playing with a sense of purpose, passion and structure; c) achieve a top four finish in the league; and finally d) plug the gaping holes which exist in this squad.

Despite everything, I do not believe these goals are unachievable - although there has to be some acknowledgement that it will be a tough and testing period for this football club. And if we were to face another large scale injury crisis, a CL spot might become overly ambitious, because it's going to be impossible to address every weakness in the squad in one summer, because it's fucking riddled with them. I only hope that, unlike his predecessor, the new coach looks at our reserve team when considering what positions need filling for the first team. The two squads have to be linked to save money for he club and to make the youth system worthwhile.

Pellegrinni and Hodgson have always been two of my preferred candidates for the position, so, if the rumours are to be believed, I'm delighted these two are fighting it out for the position.

I hope its kenny that comes in and I hope/expect he's had a good look at the promising kids at the club and gives them a chance

aside from that i think the owners will fluff off and we'll play at least some enjoyable football

If we get Arda Turan, I will eat my keyboard key by key.

Given that we don't know what the ownership situation will be, what is the point of predicting anything specifically? Everything has been hinging on that for so long, I can't bring myself to care until we know the new owners are.

Are rhetorical questions meant to be answered?

We'll play 38 games in the league.

Are you sure? We only turned up for about half that last season!

It doesn't look to good to me to be honest but until we know who gets sold this summer then we can't say.

If we keep what we have we could possibly finish top four but with Stevie's heart maybe not in it and Torres permanently injured etc .... simple fact is we need strengthening for top 4.

I fear if Mash goes and if he is not suitably replaced to the satisfaction of Gerrard then he will walk also, Torres would maybe give us another season.

I've read a few times that unless we are strengthened considerably then our key players will be open to offers and given that GnH are still holding out for all thirty pieces for the club, I think we are in the position were we will be hoping that the loyalty of Gerrard and Torres alone will keep them here, I doubt very much we will be sold and the team stregthened as they both would want in the interim.

With new owners?? who knows....
Without..... 5th or 6th again, perhaps lower and our best players will eventually walk.

Realistic?

No new owners, no new stadium, no (or at least hardly any) new players, one or two big names to leave, finish outside the top four (does it matter where?) Torres and/or Gerrard to leave the summer after if they haven't already, financial, spiritual and mental meltdown.

Depressingly, these are probably more realistic than what I'm hoping for, which is new owners, new players and a top four finish

I want a half decent coach who gets us playing some decent attacking football. We need a few decent first teamers plus some of the young talent and can give it a right go to make a welcome return to the top 4!
