Good grief. I don't often disagree with you, Froggy, but on this one I have to. Wilkins is possibly the most overrated player I've ever seen at the top level. Whatever he may have been capable of, most of the time his passes were crabwise sideways things. England had a MASSIVE stroke of luck when he got injured just after having been made captain, and Bryan Robson took over from him.

The story in "The Times" is somewhat different. According to them Wilkins was told at half-time that his contact, which is up for renewal in just over a month, wouldn't be renewed, and he then left after the match.
They also say Ancelotti was "stunned" and the players are unhappy about it.

"The Times" certainly doesn't. All it says there is that Wilkins wasn't as highly rated by Abramovich and the off-the-field management as he was by Ancelotti, without giving any actual reason(s) for that.
