Cavalieri 7 - Didn't have much to do.

Kelly 8 - His best performance so far. Did well getting forward despite being predominantly right footed. Nice last ditch tackle to keep a clean sheet.

Carra 7 - Solid

Skrtel 7 - Solid

Johnson 8 - He was more of a right midfielder than a defender in this game. Linked well with Cole.

Lucas 6 - Poor first half better in the second. Great pass to Cole.

Gerrard 8 - Great game all round.

Jovanovic 7 - Quick, great vision, great passing great game.

Pacheco 5 - Made the wrong the decisions time and time again.

Cole 9 - MOM - fantastic Anfield début. Linked well with Ngog, Gerrard and Jovanovic.

Ngog 6 - Missed too many chances. Well taken goal though.

Subs:

Aquaman 7 - Great passing.
Spearing 6
Maxi 6

Cavalieri 7 - Nothing wrong nothing right..

Johnson 8 - Fantastic at bombing forward and quick to get back.
Carra 7 - Great defensively (as expected) yet little going forward (as expected)
Skrtel 7 - Great defensively (as expected) yet little going forward (as expected)
Kelly 8 - Very impressive out of position. Definitely has a big future in the game.

Pacheco 6 - Perhaps a little jaded after U21 tournament last week? Nothing seemed to work for him tonight.
Gerrard 9 - Captin Fantastic.
Lucas 7 - Meh.
Jonavic 8 - Very impressed with our Serb.. Strong, good cross, pace, good shot on him.. Definitely would feel comfortable with him playing upfront should Fernando be out of action.

Cole 9 - Was everywhere and deserved a goal. Lots of brilliant skill and evidence to show he can play behind the striker very aptly..
N'Gog 6.5 - Moments of brilliance, moments of wankness.. Should've had a hatrick. Very well taken goal and got himself in good positions time and time again. Will be a beast in a few years time.

Subs
Aquilani 7
Maxi 6
Spearing 6

Me too Peatch. Gerrard playing deeper in CM and Cole in behind Torres could be excellent for us. Look at the chances created this evening (shit opposition, I know) Torres will lap that shit up.

Harsh on Pacheco. Not everything worked for him, because the game was 20-50% faster than he has been playing at, but I loved what he tried to do - cocky, confident and quick. His execution will need to improve quickly, but I thought he did some great things tonight and was unlucky not to score.

I somewhat agree with you but the fact that it didn't work kept his rating down.
One moment of brilliance was the throughball to Ngog in the first half.
The lad looks very promising and I hope this is the first of many starts in his Liverpool career.

Interesting and thoughtful ratings. Not just an idea of how the player performed on the night or a standard response based on pre-conceived notions, but considerations to the bigger picture.

You're just upset as you put so little thought into yours 😉
The comments besides the ratings do help, though - ssespecially when they offer balanced opinion.

Cole showed everything we hoped of him. He's proper class. Loved Gerrard in the deeper role too, but he had practically no defensive work to do. Jovanovic looks a very promising player too. Delighted with what I saw tonight.

I missed the game (last 10mins aside). Is it worth watching the repeat?
[/quote]

We did play some very good football so yes.
It was no doubt a terrible team but some players looked like they were told to go out and enjoy themselves and thats worth watching

If you want to see what Joe Cole and Jovanovic might bring to the party then watch it. The game itself is a bit of an exhibition match.

Although we were playing a poor side with a catastrophic defence, I thought there were a hell of a lot of positives to take from that match. Kelly and Pacheco look as if they can make it to the top level. We strung together some great passing moves which promise a lot for the coming season. And even though this was a match which many players might have just wanted to stroll through, the level of commitment from the players was 100%, particularly the new boys Jovanovic and Cole who showed that they really wanted to make a good impression on their home débuts, which I think is important.

i saw this thread before watching the highlights... i didnt know what to expect...

I thought there was a buzz around the squad - A lot of movement and creativity... Sometimes players took the unselfish option and sometimes they went for goal when they probably should have passed. Considering most of the lads have only played 80 or so minutes of Football so far it was very positive.

Pacheco looked good early on but i think playing against kids in the last few weeks made him a bit lazy when trying to beat people.. a few times he just looked like he expected the defender to simply trick themselves.. regardless - Delighted to see him get a start

Cavalieri - 6

Johnson - 8 - this is how he should be used against weak opposition. He terrified them.

Kelly- 7 - good from start to finish. I like Kelly but I'm not sure all these calls for him to start against Arsenal are right. There is a Pacific Ocean in difference between Arsenal and Rabotnicki. HE has an excellent future.

Carra - 6 - I think he got eventually got bored & wanted to join the party.

Skrtel - 6 - solid, not a lot to do.

Lucas - 6 - put in some decent passes but when he gets the ball he turns like a supertanker, slowing down our whole game. It was very obvious in that game especially because we were pinging the ball around.

Gerrard - 8 - so he may not have had much (any) defensive work to do but he ran the game from midfield.

Jovanovic - 7.5 - so much better than I had anticipated. Strong on the ball, excellent passing and vision, can play anywhere along the front line, he will see a lot of games this season and that's no bad thing. It is difficult to imagine Kuyt moving this guy off the RW as Jova adds so much more.

Cole - 8.5 - just a shame his one real chance to score (header) was a poor attempt (if he had scored it may have been disallowed for offside anyway). Otherwise a wonderful exhibition of what he is going to bring to Liverpool. And he really looked like he was enjoying himself and his new found freedom. He's going to love it here and the Kop are going to love him back.

Pacheco - 7 - In contrast to others here I thought he did a really good job on his full debut. His passing was good, he tracked back when needed and was very creative, not everything came off - which is the price you pay with creative players, but there is no doubting his skill or technique (was there one hard high pass from the centre out to him on the wing that came to him at around chest height, he took it down in one movement and had it under control in an instant - I actually uttered Wow). He is not yet on the same wave-length as the other players, quelle surprise, and his decision making was a little dubious at times too, but I would not complain seeing him start most EPL games.

N'Gog - 5 - I remain of the same opinion. Nice around the pitch, control and passing, however when put in a potential goal scoring position his brain freezes and he just reacts instinctively, and most of the time it isn't the right reaction. Could and should have had a hat-trick. We need a damn good back up to Torres if we are going to do anything this season ..... and N'Gog isn't it. Would prefer Kuyt up front if a straight choice between them.

Maxi - 6.5 - Came on and was instantly on the same wave-length. He looks even better with good players around him.

Aquilani - 6.5 - See Maxi above. He is going to be good this season.

Spearing - N/A - just a little cameo where he did no wrong.

I thought Jovanovic was very impressive, he's deceptively quick, he looks like he's not even trying half the time and he still gets there ahead of the player. Cole had a great game too, you can see the credence in playing him in the hole position.

As for Pacheco, was he really that bad? I thought he was all over the place in attack and showed good awareness, not everything came off but he did alot of good stuff too.

Cavalieri 6

Johnson 8 - Some people don't seem to realise that we have one of the best right backs in the world playing for us.
Carra 7 - Really seemed to enjoy himself.
Skrtel 7 - Looked very comfortable in possession.
Kelly 8 - Wow, what potential.

Jovanovic 7 - Very good debut, seems very motivated.
Lucas 4 - I despair.
Gerrard 8 - Seems to have his old spark back, he seemed to play deeper at times and could potentially fill Mascher's shoes!
Cole 8* - MOM, his skill and vision bring the best out of others around him.
Pacheco 7 - Tried lots of things and on another day he could have scored & made a couple - looks the part.

N'Gog 7 - Took his goal well but should have scored a couple more, he's probably not going to make the grade but he has a chance.

Maxi 7 - He's slow so if he plays in a slow, methodical team (like Rafa's) his skill and vision are wasted but if he receives the ball in a quick, thrusting attack he can look like a marvellous player.

Aquilani 7 - I have a suspicion he could surprise many people this season, great passer, great energy and moves the ball QUICKLY.

Spearing 7 - Gave Lucas a short lesson in how to tackle.

I can't be arsed to rate the players but Lucas was poor. It was good to see Roy looking angry when Lucas dilly-dallied and didn't release the ball quickly enough when an attack broke down with Cole running offside.

N'Gog is still too lightweight to be an acceptable backup to Torres, so it looks as if we are going to start the new season the same way we started the last season, knowing that if and when Torres gets injured we are fucked.

While I agree we still need a striker, let's not forget how wrong Benitez got it last year. In the one time when Kuyt played upfront with N'gog they looked threatening, lively, dangerous and they scored goals. Sadly Benitez spent the rest of time persisting with an inexperienced striker alone, against 4 Premiership defenders. Like the Masher & Lucas pairing, this was a flawed concept from day one. In short, a squad weakness was far greater exposed simply because of Benitez going mental.

As it stands we have Kuyt and Jova who can play as strikers, as well as Torres.

We're not as weak there as some people would have you believe - but we still need another goal-scorer we can rely upon, and especially if we're going to be dropping Gerrard back into a deeper role.
