Random fighter plane question

Random question I've had for ages and watching Hot Shots just reminded me, when a fighter plane takes off from an aircraft carrier why do you often seem then do a barrel roll immediately after getting in the air?

I'm assuming it's not just to look cool like Maverick & Goose?

Obviously this is a crucial question I need to know the answer to.
