How good is this lad? Sky is the limit for him. The way he shields the ball with his torso and wins almost every 50/50 battle against much older and stronger heavier players is amazing to watch. In a couple of years, when he puts on more muscle mass and learns to finish better, he will be absolutely unplayable.

Yes, this is how I remembered it from the Oldham game - he was actually pretty poor in the first 30 minutes or so; he was finding space but there wasn't any end-product from that. After the 30 minute mark or so though, he started to kick on, and his performance for the remaining hour convinced me to give him the MOTM nod over Henderson. It was the reverse of Alberto, whom I thought actually looked pretty good in the first 30 minutes with his ball movement and probing passes before fading off as Sterling went on the ascendancy.

Sterling's work at RB in the last 10 minutes or so was quite impressive. The yellow he picked up was totally undeserved in my opinion. He's surprising me with his versatility and his deceptive strength and ability to hold his own against bigger/stronger opponents.

Hopefully he'll keep his head and have his feet firmly on the ground.

I think he's a terrific option to have at fullback too. He plays the position really well for someone who has always been a forward/winger.

If he weren't only 5'3 he'd be a fucking incredible permanent RB in this formation. Even the (relatively in football terms) diminutive Carlos & Cole weren't that small.

He's bigger than 5,3 now though isn't he? He looks to have grown a fair bit to me.

He's taller than Carlos according to Google / Wiki and exactly the same height as Lahm.

Anyways, he's been a revelation in the last couple months, which is great for us because it's bailed Rodgers out of having to deal with the dismal failures that are Aspas and Moses (thus far).

Yeah, I can see Raheem being moved to RB at times when we need to go for an all-out attack, like Valencia at Man U. He's tough to beat 1 on 1.

He's still got alot to learn, but because he seems to have been around for so long, people forget just how young he is. Carra was talking about Moses a few weeks back and made the point about why wingers are generally hit and miss and in and out the team, because they're often a liability. You look at how much someone like Lennon swings from being God awful, to looking like a real threat, he's the same every season, but I'm sure that purple patch is probably worth the points. Sterling looks like he could be alot more consistent a player with more strings to his bow. He can defend, his passing is occasionally sublime (something that rarely gets mentioned). If he can sort out his end product and his final decision making over the next couple of years, we and he are onto a winner.

The point about wingers being a liability is a good one, they are one of the few positions where they're encouraged to take the risks that most often lead to losing possession.

Wingers are only Liabilities if they don't score.

The modern "winger" needs to chip in with at around 10 goals per season and have some guile about them

Yeah, it is a good point by Molby. He was doing the same against Spurs time and again and against City. Those runs behind the FB have become a really potent weapon for us this season. I really think if we train him hard on 1-on-1 situations he could be phenomenal. Torres used to get coaching on 1-on-1s from the goalkeeping coach, who would do homework on the opposition keeper and how they respond to these situations (whether they spread their feet, go down early, focus on the near post or whatever). Torres said that it meant he knew as soon as he was in the situation the option he was going to take, he didn't need to decide on a type of finish. This is the sort of coaching that would help Raheem immensely.

One player desperate to make his mark on Sunday is Raheem Sterling, who could clinch a 10th consecutive start if selected. The winger has been in impressive form since returning to the team in early December and Rodgers acknowledged the 19-year-old's vast improvement in recent weeks. "He's been outstanding," said the boss. "He's been brilliant and has played really well in some big games. "In other games he was very, very prominent. I think you've seen what he can give to the team when he's really focused. He's in a good moment now. He's happy and really focused on his football.

I know some people were looking at me when I stuck him at right-back early on a few times, but I think you see now, whenever he does play in that position, what he can give you, both going forward and defensively. "He's probably one of the strongest players I've ever seen. Pound for pound, he's as strong as anyone. You marry that strength and his quality and his focus, and then you've got a young player who has just turned 19, who is going to be an outstanding prospect. "I've been really pleased for him because he's a good kid. He's taken a wee bit of stick from me since I've come in here. But it's always been in the best interest of him and the club. He's a good boy, he's consistently producing."

With injury to Arsenal's Theo Walcott ruling him out for a substantial part of the remainder of the season - and potentially the FIFA 2014 World Cup finals thereafter - Rodgers agreed there could be an opening for Sterling. The Liverpool man has one international cap to his name and will be eager to play his way into contention to be chosen as part of Roy Hodgson's squad for this year's tournament in Brazil. "I'm sure the England people and staff will be looking at that," said Rodgers. "Raheem's obviously one of the outstanding talents in the U21 team. [Walcott's injury] certainly opens up a door. "But all he can do is concentrate on his Liverpool career and everything else follows that. He's played nine games now on the spin and been excellent in them, so hopefully he can continue that run of form and do his job, which is to score goals and create goals."

He's one of the first on the teamsheet these days for me.
Lets hope his form continues. Seems to have grown on a personal level aswell along with maturing on the pitch.

Yup. A lot of people seem to be dropping him in to put Sturridge in the team but Sterling is too good to drop at the moment.

Agree with that. I would drop Lucas and play 4-4-2 with Hendo and Gerrard in the middle. When Allen comes back, it will become more interesting.

Genuine conundrum on who to play in the team in terms of good players for the first time in what feels like forever. Fantastic
