Strange decision from Benitez to stay on with Newcastle.

I guess it means he's close to family and he'll get a good salary but still.

From Real to the championship inside 12 months.

Is it strange? He wasnt wanted at Real and can live with his family.
The Newcastle fans have been very vocal with their support and he's given full control of transfers.
Whether or not thats a good thing remains to be seen but sounds like a good move for him.

I actually think it's a good decision - the fans love him, he'll have a year to really start building the team before they (most likely) get promoted ... and I can see him building a top 6 team.

They love him now. Lose a couple of games and those gutbucket geordies will be turning on him.

Yeah his nous in the transfer market is legendary.

He is getting paid £15 million over 3 years,

Nothing strange about being in it for the money.

It's not THAT strange.

Newcastle are of course historically hopeless failures, but are a big club with potential, and he is probably thinking that it shouldn't be too much of a challenge to take them back up.

However, any trouble with that and he has ready made excuses already lined up. They have a horrible owner who the fans are already not that keen on, so should be easy enough to blame him and lack of funds. They have also just been relegated, so by definition he can claim to have taken over a shit squad that needs rebuilding.

I hope he does well there though and does get them promoted.

To use Keegan's phrase, I would love it if they DIDN'T get back up. They need a few years in a lower league to shake them out of their ridiculous delusion that they have some kind of divine right to win stuff and challenge for titles. The last time they won anything apart from promotion was forty-seven years ago, and yet they're constantly raging about how terrible it is that a manager can't get them above mid table. That's where you belong, you daft feckers!

He never in his whole career had a chance to build his own squad. Ashley can't even compared to Hicks and Gillett. G&H was much worse. Ashley is like an angel compared to them.

Not even at Napoli he had the final say.

You can't be this retarded

I am happy for him and the Toon. I do have a soft spot for both Rafa and the Toon so a win win for me.

I'm sure he's delighted to be in the Championship after Fat Sam proved to be better than Rafa

Come on Ross. I agree with you on the "there are several factors other than managers which affect a club's success" theory but even you cant blame Rafa for Newcastle relegating.

I'm not blaming him. Just pointing out Fat Sam kept a worse side up.
