Just thinking -

Could we have done more to keep Alonso. Not sold Crouch, not purchased Keane. Treated Riera better - would we have won the league?

It's all relative IMO. He fucked alonso over the season before, he was always gonna leave.

Keane mightve been an ok buy if he'd have had faith kept in him, but heyho

Reira can fuck off.

And Crouch wanted to leave, cos we weren't playing him. I agree we should have done more, and actually played him.

Is it fair to ask for more than better than you've ever done? 86 points won the league this year.

I tell you who will make worse mistakes in the transfer market.
Roy Hodgson the salah haraam zadah benchord banda gandu kutha!!!!

if all the shit signings had been good signings then yes, we'd have obviously done better, assuming of course that the handful of great signings that Benitez made were still made too of course!

Whether we'd have won the league, who knows? I reckon if we had been building a team year on year rather than chopping and changing like we did we'd have had a decent chance though.

For all that's been said about that issue, can anyone authoritatively say that even if the events of the preceding summer had not occurred (i.e. Rafa/Liverpool trying to trade Alonso for Barry), that Alonso would have turned down the chance to move to Real Madrid when they came for him to stay at Liverpool?

Is it absolutely impossible to think that he wanted to leave and he had a very convenient excuse handed to him?

No, it isn't.

I could say a lot more than that, and it would all be in support of what you're saying, but the arguments about this got quite bitter at the time so I'll leave it there.

You're right, it is better left there.

I think we would have won the league if:

a) we had spent the £20m on Keane more wisely

or

b) if we had been able to spend the £12m we got when shipping Keane out.

Rafa's problem was buying quantity over quality. Yes we were skint at times and Rafa had to make up the numbers but we lost out on Alves & Simao. They would have made a massive difference to our team!

If Rafa had bought less shit players we would have a better team and would have won more.

Great thread

If we had spent the money on Arshavin after Euro 2008 like many on here advocated then i think you might be right.

I never had a great problem with his transfers, he dropped bollocks like all managers do.

Hmmm . . . there's buying shit players, and then there's completely fogetting to buy players for crucial positions, whilst buying shit players for other positions at the same time though Vlad.

There's dropping a bollock, and then there's teabagging a crocodile

I don't buy the "completely forgetting" bit. Rafa made some blunders but he's far from stupid, let alone that stupid. Either he overrated N'Gog's readiness to be Torres' understudy or (equally likely IMO) spending promises on which he was relying were broken.

While we will never know the true story, you have to give some credence to the possibility of that being the case.

Otherwise the idea that he spunked the best part of £35M on a right back and a crocked midfielder begs questions as to his sanity, let alone his transfer record

Crouch's money helped pay for Torres?

Anywho, the kicker, as already stated, was binning Keane without a replacement to hand.
