RAFA: SPINE IS THERE, WE'LL FIND REST
Jimmy Rice 07 June 2009

Rafa Benitez believes he has assembled the spine of a title-winning side - and claims the club is working tirelessly behind the scenes to find any missing links this summer.
Benitez has made retaining current stars a priority over the last two months, with new deals agreed for Daniel Agger, Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt.

The Anfield boss now hopes to add to his talented squad over the coming months.

"We are working very hard to keep the spine of the team - that was always the idea," Benitez told LFC Magazine.

"We have Pepe Reina as the number one goalkeeper with Diego Cavalieri behind him, another good goalkeeper. Then we have Skrtel, Carragher and Agger - three good centre-backs.

"Then you go to the midfield with Alonso, Mascherano, Lucas and Gerrard, with Torres up front and Ngog, who is a very good prospect. We have a good squad that is still young, so hopefully we can improve further.

"We know we still need to improve in some specific areas. We will be working very hard to do that over the summer."

This month marks the fifth anniversary of Benitez's arrival in England.

His brief back in June 2004 was to repeat the trick he performed with Valencia in La Liga - breaking the stranglehold of two dominant and high-spending teams using less resource.

Five years on, Benitez has taken the Reds closer to the league title than at any time since 1990 - but he admits transforming Liverpool from top four also-rans to genuine championship contenders has been a tall order.

"We didn't know everything when we first arrived here," said the boss. "Now we can see little things that can make a massive difference.

"Now we know these things we can be more precise, sign players in a better way, approach games and different competitions in a better way. We know the rules and the style of the game in England much better now.

"Maybe sometimes you don't need as long to start challenging as it has taken us. But when the other teams are so strong it becomes much more difficult. You can try to move fast, but if they go as fast as you, you have to go faster.

"The only way to do that is to try to sign the right players every single time.

"With Sami Hyypia leaving we have just two players left at the club from when I took over - Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.

"Coming to a club that needs a lot of work is a massive difference to arriving at a club without too many changes to make. From my time here, Chelsea and United already had big squads with top-class players. They have both spent big money since and improved a lot.

"We could not spend that kind of money, but look at the level of the squad now compared to five years ago. We have had to work hard rebuilding the whole squad.

"It's not just a case of saying, 'Oh, Liverpool should win because they are spending.' The other clubs are spending too but had better squads from the beginning. That is why if we are to reduce the gap we have to do things almost perfectly.

"We have learned together what it means to stay close to the top of the table from the beginning to the end. I am sure that will help us in the future."

In short Rafa seems to be targeting fullbacks and wingers during this transfer window.

But we only spend big money on star players....apparently.

Apparently...

The 'bifida' part, maybe

And no mention of Dirk! Very strange...

I had the exact same thought. But I guess he just forgot to mention him.

Does the spine not equate to the central positions throughout the team?

I think it's time that everyone accepted Dirk for what he is, a valuable member of the squad and big game player.

Outside of Ronaldo, I doubt there's a right sided player in the league who can touch him at the minute.

I figured the spine of your team runs down the centre, as Dirk spends most of the time on the flank he doesn't count, despite being a fixture in the first eleven - still a bit odd to include N'gog and Lucas though.

The reassuring thing from this article and his 'fine tuning' statement is both suggest that he's going to spend heavily on two or three positions, rather than littering the squad with Distin's & Tuncays.

i wouldn't have lucas anywhere near my spine. when was this interview done? seems strange as though its reported he tried to bring in barry, oh of course that was to play left back.

come on rafa, close a deal or two, after all is that not what u blamed parry for?

right back
left wing
second striker

same as last year...

No mention of Dirk, Reira or Babel there Rafa - Remember, those 3 that you spent 30mill on?

Right, so do Mors think that Benitez hasn't mentioned dirk because he's...what? Embarrassed about him?

Or is it perhaps, just another ill-conceived, shit post?

Aren't they the 'arm' bit rather than the spine which generally means the central part of the team ?

I'd say that Dirk was now a key member of the team, so part of the spine. Regardless of what dopey fucking brendan thinks.

I always regard 'spine' as striker/s, CM, CB's & GK.
in that case our spine was pretty much fine when he took over. but regardless of this i would be shocked if we didn't buy/chase spine players this window. a new keeper, centre back, defensive midfielder, defensive striker and then if there's any money left over we'll probably fall 3 million short of silva.

Er, no it wasn't.

I was amazed he didn't mentioned Dirk also. It obviously means nothing but it's just unlike Rafa not to mention him.

Overall, thought that was a decent summary from Rafa. He admits that he's had to learn along the way and that whilst there has been a lot of improvement, it could have of course been better. Maybe guys like David Byrne or even Rafa4PM (at times) could bear this in mind when thinking that the slightest bit of criticism is geared towards "undermining the manager" or whatever (although how that is achieved on an Internet forum is beyond me).

Er, no it wasn't.

champions league winning keeper (yes he'd lost confidence but dudek had been as good as most)
hyypia, henchoz and carra (houllier moved him there)
didi and gerrard
owen with cisse coming in

i'm not saying its not better now but in 2003 we were that elusive winger short, pretty much the same now.

I disagree, rage.

Duduk was a fine servant and remembered for the CL final but he made outstanding errors (remember Forlans goal ?).

Henchoz and Hyppia as a pairing were great during Ged triple but really only had another season left.

Same goes for Didi, and no way is Cisse good enough.

Take that in account and that isn't really a spine of a team.

i only put cisse in ther as rafa put n'gog in there also, i think cisse's the better player.

i actually think torres, reina and agger are as good a buy for them positions as anyone has made in rafa's time in the premiership

i'd rather have alonso in my team in that role he plays for us ahead of most and gerrard in the second striker role has been a revelation.

whilst maybe not the mist popular view i think skertel and masch are overrated and a player like lucas should never pull on a liverpool top ever again. i really don't mind n'gog but i'd rather one of our youth players had been given the opportunity he has instead.

all said and done it really wasn't our spine that was the problem under houllier imo. we lacked in the wide areas, we still do.

i really hope he somehow magics a quality left sided midfielder and a much more dynamic right back this summer. last years purchases on the flanks were awful.

Murphy Hamann (aged) Diao/Biscan Gerrard or Gerrard Mascherano Alonso Lucas... yes, let me think

Gerrard did absolutely fucking everything the last couple years, a lot of hustle and bustle but not a lot of organization. As we've seen Murphy was in a slump he'd get out of, but for me it isn't even close, we've got a really nicely balanced midfield, and someone trying to look like they belong.
Yossi gone?
i'd not describe yossi as a spine player. he is clearly best played in the hole and perhaps we'll see him there more next season as gerrard is rested and/or rotates with alonso and masch.

it's clearly a short term solution and that way we can blow all our money on a left sided midfielder and a right back.

rafa didn't mention kuyt, yossi or any of the fullbacks. not a slight on them I suspect it clear to anyone with eyes we're clearly sronger down the middle then out wide. the thing is the exact same thing could have been said last year and rafa attempt to address the problem was

keane
riera
doessena
degan
ngog

We did have a decent spine when Houllier left. The problem was that some were on the way out and some were at the age where we already needed to start thinking about replacements. And there was fuck all depth.

correct. a valid excuse five years ago for not spending big out wide but last year? if rafa had signed a big player out wide and they never worked out at least the attempt would have been made but his wide midfield signing was riera, you could argue he thought bael would have progressed faster but it was clear from the get go riera was first choice.

With the spine in place perhaps Rafa will concentrate on growing some balls against lesser teams and placing the emphasis on 3 points home and away (much as he did towards the end of the season).

We need to continue this new attacking mentality at the start of the new season.

to be fair to rafa the home games wasn't about 'balls' it was about brains i.e. the creativity to break down stubborn defenses
