Rafa - Ballague's Assertions

Rafa Benitez said he would quit Liverpool if Fernando Torres is sold. The Spanish striker could have been sold last summer to Manchester City if Benitez had accepted their offer – and there will undoubtedly be more enquiries coming in for Torres until the day he does actually leave.

But as I have explained in The Daily Mirror this morning, what is remarkable about the offer made to Liverpool last summer is the scale of the City bid: £70million for Torres plus an additional £30million for Javier Mascherano. Benitez rejected both offers from Mark Hughes – but I wonder if those Liverpool fans clamouring for some headline grabbing transfer activity and the thrill of purchasing the likes of Ribery, Villa and Silva would have preferred Benitez to say yes?

In rejecting those bids in the summer, Benitez stuck with proven Premier League performers who are guaranteed to succeed, ahead of the instant impact of glamorous summer transfer activity. And if you ask me, Rafa has done the right thing .

If anyone should question Benitez`s commitment after making that comment about leaving Liverpool – then they should know this. Rafa Benitez turned down the opportunity to take over at Real Madrid in the summer for the FOURTH time since he has been at Anfield.

Benitez rejected a package worth €6million per year over a four-year deal and a transfer budget that a manager`s dreams are made of.

The reason he rejected Real Madrid? Rafa believes that he is in the middle of a major project at Anfield, one that so far hasn`t reaped the rewards he expected, but is clearly a work in progress and he has an unshakeable faith in its ultimate success. The aim is not to bring one league title to Anfield, but a succession of them and an era of Liverpool challenging for all major titles for years to come…

Cue Rage claiming that Rafa should have sold Torres and Masher in order to wheel and deal to strengthen the squad.

Thanks for not selling our best players, Rafa.

As for turning down Real Madrid, give me a break. Madrid are a circus of a club.

I dont think Rafa needs a well done for rejecting offers for those two players, its fucking common sense!!!!

This whole Rafa rejecting Real thing doesn't sit well with me. Besides money, why would he ever want to go there when he knows he could be out of the job within a month? If Real had lost half the games we've lost recently with Rafa in charge, he'd be picking up his P45. Whilst we should be pleased with the loyalty he has shown, equally, Rafa is lucky with the (general) patience/time he's been given with us.

He might have the odd fault here and there, but nobody can doubt Rafa's loyalty to us.

If a bid of £100m came in for Torres, would anybody sell him?

Rafa and Real is probably meant to be, for better or worse, at some point

Definitely

I think City have come across with an improved 1 Million quid offer just for Nando, and thats why Rafa is doing his 'I'll resign if he goes' thing!

Rafa will be here at least 5 more years and so he should be. I appreciate what he's done for us and continues to do for us, run of poor form notwithstanding. I too love the guy.

NO!!! he is worth more than money can buy!
In a fucking second. 100m (if invested in the club) is 5 world class players instead of 1 injury prone one.
Villa, Silva, Cole.j, Diarra.L, Hangaland.

The whole situation got the better of me. I'm normally a modest man.

And quite charming too.

That can be fixed. Anyway, I don't think he's another Owen, more like a 'still-growing' Gerrard.

If we ever sell Torres, I will give up on football.
Yup. Give me Torres over 5 potentials any day.

We're not a selling club, so on the back of Alonso, we certainly don't want to give off that impression, especially in our current state.

That wasn't the jist of one of the Rafa interviews the other day. Buy low and sell high seemed to be the new mantra.

Yeah so were a ... turnaround club? Or an investor club??

Nope were a club with no money for players
