Advocaat had responded to the suggestion that rivals Sweden could beat Luxembourg 8-0 and thus rack up a potentially pivotal goal difference by saying:

"They won’t win 8-0. What a stupid question!"

Sweden won 8-0, and if i heard it correctly the Netherlands need to beat Sweden 7-0 to make the playoff.

Maybe the quote of the week is Moyes saying no-one could have done better than he did at United after Ferguson left.

Advocaat ignored all the Warninks signs

He might be right. I wondered at the time if their board knew this and deliberately went for a manager of, er, less than top quality to replace Baconface for that reason, expecting to replace him with Mourinho or similar after the almost inevitable failure happened.

The board went along with the manager Baconface recommended: Moyes.

I don't doubt that he wasn't the only person on their shortlist, but quite a few of those were either controversial or unavailable. So, no I don't think he was first-choice by a long shot, but as part of some kind of byzantine plot to allow a future manager to take over once Moyes had failed as planned?

Bollocks.

Oh, I admit it's far-fetched, but so was the fact that Ginsoak recommended Moyes in the first place. The idea that he actually thought Moyes would be up to the job was so staggering even then, let alone in hindsight, that I still find it hard to take at face value.

One too many gins, maybe.

I wonder whether he gave consideration to what would enhance his legacy more - finding a successor to continue on winning or finding one to have the wheels fall off and therefore make his own achievements look the better.

Good point, plus he left them a squad in need of major surgery and I'm sure he knew that, so yes, he may well have wanted to find a scapegoat.
