Well, it's not a resolution (don't really believe in them) so much as a snap decision but I'm having a crack at stopping smoking. I've been thinking about trying it for a while and decided while I was having the last cig from my pack at work this afternoon (about 12 hours ago) that I was going to try to avoid buying a new pack as long as possible. I realise that having not made any plan or preparation that this attempt is likely to fail but I still want to see how difficult it would be to give it a shot.
I haven't been a full-time smoker for very long; only about 2 1/2 years, a very occasional smoker prior to that. I usually smoke about 6-10 cigarettes a day (lately closer to ten), the majority of them at work just for an excuse to take a few minutes' break. With all the other things I've done and put in my body it's really only cigarettes that I regret starting with. Their legality and ready availability are major barriers to stopping. I'm very much a situational smoker, using cigarettes to relieve stress or boredom, when I get in the car, or other specific times of the day. I perceive my addiction as much more psychological than physical, though obviously both components are present. There was a brief period of time earlier tonight when I was starting to go a bits nuts but I poured a stiff drink and took the edge off. We'll have to see how things go.
Obviously via my work I have access to every method of smoking cessation but I think I'm going to give this time a shot completely cold turkey just so I can gauge the difficulty.
Does anyone else have any stories, advice, etc. regarding quitting smoking they'd like to share?
