From next season, clubs must have eight “home-grown†players (under 21 and trained for three years in England or Wales) in squads of 25.

How will we fare with that rule ?

Trained for three years while under the age of 21 in England or Wales. (I'm presuming)

That makes more sense. In which case.

Gerrard
Johnson
Carragher
Insua
Spearing
Kelly
Pacheco
El Zhar

We'll be fine

The squad will be limited to 25? Could that be more of an issue?

[/quote]

Not sure how it would work really. I'm sure more details will be forthcoming but yeah it'll probably be an issue.

Our squad is currently much bigger than that, if you include the young players that is.

If you don't include the young players then it defeats the object somewhat.

I don't think the number of players who have at least some chance of playing for the first team exceeds 25 by that much.

We may register the likes of Ecclestone et al, but you can't really consider them as part of the first team squad.

"At present every Premier League club already passes the test, though Chelsea and Liverpool both have the bare minimum of eight".

hmmm so rafa was right to be wary of that. As if english players werent expensive enough already.

when it comes into force next year I imagine we will have more youngsters who will be completing their 3rd year in our academy/reserves this year and so are counted in the quota?

I'm in full support of the change. There isn't enough English players playing at type flight level and I hope this will help rectify that. I also think it will level the playing field of power in an all too disjointed league.

As for the changes closer to home, it'll stop us buying pointless shite like Voronin, Degen, Dossena and this new greek, but instead force us to get these younger players playing more frequently in our side.

"Players who are aged under 21 are eligible over and above the limit of 25 players per squad."

Where it will hurt is that you cannot register more than 17 foreigners who are over 21. We are plenty over that.

Diego Cavalieri
Alberto Aquilani
Daniel Agger
Fernando Torres
Andriy Voronin
Albert Riera
Fabio Aurelio
Yossi Benayoun
Sotirios Kyrgiakos
Dirk Kuyt
Ryan Babel
Javier Mascherano
Lucas Leiva
David Ngog
Pepe Reina
Philipp Degen
Damien Plessis
Krisztian Nemeth
Charles Itandje
Nabil El Zhar
Martin Skrtel
Andrea Dossena

BTW We used 21 foreigners in match day squads in the premier league last year.

"Players who are aged under 21 are eligible over and above the limit of 25 players per squad."

That means we can continue to register our reserves as well.

And yet we bought Zorba, knowing full well that this rule was coming in. Shame we couldn't get the extra £5m or whatever needed to buy Shawcross.

It's a good move for the English national side.

Yeah. We might actually find ourselves a decent keeper, in about 10 years time 😉

Do the players have to fall under the 'at least 3 years for an English/Welsh club' rule?

But can it be enforced retrospectively? It wouldn't in a more general sense. You couldn't take workers who'd come here and taken jobs in good faith, change the law and then boot them out as ineligible. And I'm not sure you can demand that clubs include players who have already been 'home grown' for three years before a three year rule has existed. It's another bewilderingly woozy construction.

has to be start sometime if they are going to enforce it.

Yes, obviously, but the logical time would be after three years grace. Otherwise it's a DJ Sydney type rule, such as 'From tomorrow, any poster who hasn't averaged 200 posts a week for five months will be banned'.

'The definition of home grown is trained for three years under the age of 21 by somebody in the English and Welsh professional system.

I know that, but how about the rule for players who are under 21 and can be registered over and above the limit of 25 players? Do they have to be home grown?

Either there's an incredibly detailed account somewhere that they haven't bothered to circulate, or it's another clumsy attempt at a new policy that is full of holes. Either way the few details we have are far too vague.
