Ok. We did the job twice. Blew them away early and controlled it from the 3rd minute.

We should have scored more and we should concede less, but tonight was all about result.

I am happy. Means a lot to us. Now we can nail down a few incoming transfers and make way for a couple going out. Arsenal will prove a tricky one but their defence is like Hoffenheim!

Watching the high-lights - boy do we need defenders !!! - we get split too often and Arsenal will tear us a new one if we don't sort out that defense quickly.

Great game, I'm happy that we're back where we belong and all that good stuff, but I want to play the blame game.

So, who's at fault for the goals we conceeded?
First one, definitely Lovren.
Second one, I'd say it's both Matip and Lovren. Matip is caught out and has to back track, he loses his man, who gets some space and heads it in. Lovren doesn't spot the danger and with Matip not able to reach the ball Lovren could have switched to his player and cleared it. Still Matip mostly at fault.

Firmino was at "fault" for most goals...

Nobody at Anfield seems to have noticed that Moreno gets stranded upfield and leaves acres of space for the opposition to counter-attack down the right.

I don 't know why Robertson was on the bench.

The most impressive thing about this goal has to be just how much ground Firmino made up to make the overlap and that exquisite cross, remarkable.

Also Can – he smelled an opening and steamed ahead from our end of centre circle all the way to the opposition 6-year box just in time to finish. Mane's back-heel was perfect too, absolutely sure in knowledge Firmino will be there. This goal was like football clockwork. Great example of Klopp's style.

Thats as good a goal as you will ever see.
Its a work of art.

A few years ago Real Madrid played (I think it was Ajax) and scored one of the greatest breakaway goals I ever saw, I just watched it over and over again, and was unsure id ever see a goal as good, this comes really really close.

I agree with Riise. Lovren is wank. Klopp talk about game intelligence, the quickness of thinking for Mane. Then Lovren must be the absolutely opposite.

That is 6 goals conceded in 3 games when we play Lovren / Moreno. Hopeless.

Ratings:

Ming - 6 - I thought he should have saved the first goal, but nothing he could do on the 2nd. He had one bobble, and some failed attempts to start counters, but overall, he was solid again.

TAA - 7 - steady performance.

Matip - 7- see TAA

Lovren - 4 - Tried to give Hoffenheim some life with a great pass to set up their 1st goal, and didn't cover himself with glory on their 2nd either. He's got the tools to be a great defender, but it won't happen in the current set up ... He's not good enough to be our starting CB week in, week out. Too many brainfarts.

Moreno - 6 - he leaves such large gaps at times when he bursts forward - and that leads Mane to have to chase back, which is pointless considering he's our most dangerous player. That being said, he wasn't that bad last night. Robertson should start against Arsenal mind.

Hendo - 7 - he was leading the press a few times ... first time this season. Seems like fitness is coming back, which is key. Unselfish for Firmino's goal.

Can - 8 - two goals, almost a 3rd, and harassed their players non-stop ... Kid is good.

Gini - 7 - did some wonderful things today ... I just wish this Gini was the one we'd see every week ...

Salah - 7 - +1 for the goal. Just feel he was a bit lazy today ...He'll be fine, and score 15-20 goals as he takes up such good positions in the box but he's not Mane.

Firmino - 9 - great performance. Those two early passes for Mane were just absolute class, Coutinho-esque. And some of his skill? ridiculous. Should have had 2 goals, but 1 goal, 1 assist will do ...

Mane - 9 - MOTM ... this kid is unplayable ... and the scary thing? He's still improving.

Yeah I agree with that. Was a toss up between Firmino and Mane as MOTM.

I think the combination of the two is the core issue, because they have the same weaknesses - headless and too aggressive at the wrong times.

Lovren with Milner is much more balanced. Moreno next to someone like Matip would be less scary. I also noticed how much work Henderson did last night in front of Matip and TAA. He was slightly on the right. Gini was on the left, but slightly more advanced - so less protection.

In fact, the whole team seemed to overload the right side, creating the huge attacking spaces for Mané, Moreno, Firmino, Can on the left.

Maybe there is a defensive cost for creating all that space?

Interestingly Gerrard thought no-one was at fault for the second. Both defenders and attackers were static due to the nature of the attack/cross and it was just a case of who's head it landed on. We shouldn't find someone to blame for every goal we concede, sometimes they are just good goals.

For the 2nd, it is obvious only a cross will come in, so CBs should be actively fighting for a position so that they can be in front of the striker. Not side ways and elsewhere. Lovren didn't get there, so when the cross came in he was beside the striker and could only do a half jump which was not sufficient.

It's abit like basketball where you fight for positions under the net.
