Insignificance

Didn't see a thread, but we have all craved the scrappy wins so it deserves one.

Klopp said it was the first ugly win of the season. In my eyes it was the secod, as the 2-1 against Swansea didn't please us more than on the scoreboard, but it feels good to bring home three big points.

Were I sat (in some Irish pub in Oslo) it was not easy to sense the atmosphere at the stadium, so please share some thoughts on that for People going to the game.

I think the game highlighted that we need some more leaders on the Pitch. I felt like most players went hiding and hopes someone else would turn up and win us the game. That need to adressed properly in the summer. I know Klopp likes to buy players he can turn into stars, but that doesn't free them for any responsibility.

Can was given MOM. That clearly shows that noone actually played well, and you just as well could hand it to the matchwinner. So at least he won the matchwinner award!

The atmosphere was shit and there was plenty of moaning in the crowd, which was hardly a shock considering what we were watching.

That's the worst we have played all season at home, certainly in the league anyway. 3 points will do nicely.

It was one of the worst games we've played all season. Easily worse than some of our defeats.

Yet we won, so fuck it.

Hopefully we do our usual trick of beating a top six side in City, then batter those bitter cunts. Thankfully neither side can afford to try to park the bus so should play into our hands.

We were terrible and the crowd were pretty quiet but the frustration was tangible because it was so predictable that we would play like this against Burnley just after beating Arsenal.

Emre Can man of the match? On what planet, he was desperate. In fact, that prompts me to give a manwithnobrains rating :

Mignolet 4 : Slows everything down, can't kick past the halfway line and inspires no confidence

Clyne 5 : Always hits the defender when crossing, he's in danger of morphing into Glen Johnson and where was he for their goal?
Matip 5 : Barely won a header and for his size he was less than commanding, just not physical or tough enough.
Klavan 4 : All over the place defensively and passing was slow and sideways
Milner 4 : I'm a big fan but he had a very poor game, caught out of position regularly in the 1st half where they really targeted him as a weak link against pace.

Lallana 6 : Some neat touches but struggled to get into the game, going missing for long periods
Can 5 : One extra for the goal but he was ponderous, wasteful and generally lacking in quality
Wijnaldum 6 : One extra for the goal, he was neat in possession but played it far too simple, when we were crying out for some forward momentum he just passed backwards and sideways. And he lost far far too many 50 : 50s, needs to step up and become more aggressive, carry the ball more often and show more leadership. Has the talent but must show more in games like these.

Coutinho 3 : A shadow of his early season form, lacking confidence and nothing went right for him so it was right for Klopp to take him off to put him out of his misery. He looks completely lost out wide on the left and Klopp may have to re-think our system to get him on the ball more often in advanced central positions.
Origi 2 : Hopeless, hapless clown of a performance. Lost every single ball in the air, ran around like a riderless horse in the National and apart from one ropey cross that somehow led to the 1st goal, he produced nothing of note in the whole game.
Mane 7 : The one shining light, gave us penetration and the only one to run with the ball. Docked a point for his average crossing but I guess with Dopey Origi in the middle it wouldn't have made any difference anyway.

Matip won 4 headers and made 12 clearances. Ashley Barnes won 3 headers all night.
He was our second best player if you look at different stat sites and their match scores.

Michael Keane and Ben Mee were very dominant though. Keane has been linked with several clubs, was excellent last night,

Matip and Klavan were all over the place all game. He was indecisive and slack, he wasn't the only one but he's been hit and miss, sometimes great, sometimes poor. Our defense is still a complete unpredictable calamity, as a unit and individually.

Nah, not all game. I agree during the first part of the game but they both played much better after that.
Matip is boss but we need to find another partner for him next season. Neither Klavan or Lovren should be starting.

I don't think anyone could really be declared man of the match in that turd of a performance. I'd be either giving it to Mignolet for those two punches (despite terrible distribution) or to Can for what was admittedly a very nice goal (despite terrible everything else).

Can we maybe give it to Lucas? Didn't even give up the trademark foul on the edge of the box.

Hmmm, I thought both played pretty well - especially Matip who got more commanding as the game went on. I don't think it helped that their 'protector' Can was marauding all over the place and leaving gaps everywhere.

Ratface had the opposite view. He was calling Klavan out in the first 20 minutes for not covering the channel, and then said it improved as Can was forced to drop back to help out his hapless center backs

We were shit against a shit team....who was actually surprised at us going down 1 goal within 10 min ? Probably none of us. Also the performance and effort in contrast to the arsenal and spurs game should be questioned more because Burnley did not like others park the bus for the entire game. When we were 2-1up it really looked like they could score everytime they attacked.

Really Mark, I thought they did pretty well after the Burnley goal, and they weren't helped by Can's positioning which was terrible the whole 90 mins.

And apart from a couple of games when coming back from injury ( a bit early as well according to Klopp ) Matip has been solid

Very surprising ratings.

Matip was pretty damn decent, including in the air. Klavan made some great interceptions/blocks and even kept pace with Grey in one of their breaks. 3 awful lumps upfield aside he did pretty well. Origi was decent in holding the ball up (no-one else did) and had an assist. Mane's passing was as bad as the rest of the team's .. awful, and he often tried to take on 3-4 men instead of offloading.

A 5 for Can is generous, I gave him a 3+1 for the goal.

Mignolet - 6, Clyne - 4, Matip - 6, Klavan - 7, Milner - 4, Can - 4, Wijnaldum - 6, Lallana - 5, Coutinho - 2, Mane - 6, Origi - 6.

Matip was fucking shite in the air, as almost everyone commented on

Klavan was ponderous and dreadful, especially in the first half.

Origi got an assist? Hahhahaha. He was dogshit either way.

Why do people take so much heed to the ratings of that attention seeking mong?

Excuse me, those were my ratings!!

It's all subjective but there weren't too many around me on the Kop who were complimentary about Origi's ability to hold the ball up.

There was a period in the 2nd half when Mane got fed up of making a run ahead of the ball waiting for Origi to nod on the long ball from the back only to find that every defender beat him in the air, so he attacked the next few balls himself and won every header. He's about a foot shorter but knows how to time a run and jump while Origi can't seem to figure out the flight of the ball so was late every fucking time.

And Matip was struggling with the aerial balls as well, he did win a few but most of the time headed it straight to one of their players. We were fortunate to only concede one goal, our defence is still desperate.

I do wonder why now mignolet is kicking everything he can long, even when not under pressure, which is a big change from earlier on in the season. And we usually lose possession off these clearances too.
I thought Mane was decent, the result was decent, but that was about it. Players ranged from shit to average.

Blame that on our nonexistent midfield, most times there was a forty metre radius in the middle of the pitch without one of our players in it. Klopp also mentioned how Can was getting in the way of the centre backs. I thought they withstood the aerial bombardment manfully.

Matip and Klavan were a lot better then some give them credit for, but they struggled in the first part of the game mind.

Actually I agree. But there are those with agendas who won't let them go. Most of Matip's headers seem to fall to Burnley's midfielders because ours were nowhere in sight, either too deep (Can) or hadn't got back. A word on Milner too (it's usually praise but he's been off, bar Arsenal, for a few weeks now) ..... totally absent yesterday which is where Klavan came in doing the LB last tackle/saving job on 2-3 occasions, despite some posters' inability to appreciate the job he did.

Yup it's hard to head clear from your own pealty area to the half way line!

Poor the angry Leo. So befuddled and enraged by everything in life

It's quite amusing though

I enjoyed the match but mainly because I watched it boxed off my bush on top drawer kiff in Rotterdam. 'Silver Streak' it was called and was quite lovely. A mellow high and a very giggly one. Well back to the game. I thought Origi put in a complete festering turd of a performance. Coutinho lost the ball so many times - He was fucking shite. I thought Klavan and Matip did OK. Klavan in particular threw himself at one particular shot that looked a certain goal. He gets props for that alone.

Oh by the time the game finished I had the munchies so bad the very handy Kebab shop across the street from apartment was a godsend. Silver Streak + Red Victory + Proper Kebab = A very happy Barba Roja 🙂

Ha, sounds like the best way to watch us at the moment!

Well quite. It certainly put a different slant on an otherwise turgid game. I was visiting Rotterdam to do my food and travel blog but suffice to say I didn't get much written. I will say though that Rotterdam is a very nice, clean, friendly city - Albeit a bit wobbly 😉
