Labour MP Stella Creasy alleged in a parliamentary debate today, that the reason why the England football team struggles is that there are too many privately-educated players.

Nothing to do with picking lemons to be the manager and the FA refusing winter breaks?

Somebody was saying on the radio a few days ago that the FA seem willing to look again at the possibility of a winter break.

About to appoint another dud to the manager's job though.

I don't think a winter break would work in Britain because the weather is too unpredictable. You would find that the weather was lovely during the winter break, and the snow and ice would arrive when the season resumed!

Obviously need some sort of winter break. Having 43 hours between our games in the start of January is ridiculously stupid.

There should be a break from like the 5th of January to the 20th. It'll leave Christmas football intact, negate the impact of the ACON, and provide those outside Africa the fortnight holiday they need to recuperate.

Pretty much this.

No way Boxing Day games stop, clubs always sell out.

I don't think the 'Winter Break' is specifically aimed at avoiding the worst of the weather (which is usually md-January to mid-February anyway). It's a mid-season break aimed at giving players a short rest and time with their families over the festive period.

The radio report I heard said that the model the FA were looking at would involve the Christmas games staying as they are.

Good, they're a national tradition, and a huge part of the leagues revenue model, we should 100% keep them.

I wonder if they'd ever consider removing the League Cup... is it necessary? I just don't get it really. It has no non FL division teams, so you'd expect it would be considered mroe prestigious - but it is an inconvenience to all. Obviously its nice to get to Wembley. But surely this is an obvious way to reduce a hectic calendar - or changing it and not including PL teams.

It is far from an inconvenience to all ... the revenue it generates for clubs on the brink of bankruptcy (and most of the lowest division teams are often hovering there or thereabouts) is huge (as a % of income - I saw one game for a small club last season produced 500% of their normal annual income. Lose it at the peril of isolating grassroots football.

It's already changed for most Premiership teams, who use it as a opportunity for youth and squad players. So it serves a purpose.

But yeah, I only start taking notice at QF stage.

That is what the FA cup is there to provide. It is an inconvenience.

I thought the thread was about Peterborough United for a moment.

I agree with the break being in January and adding a couple more weekday games

No club targets a catchment area of independent schools more thoroughly and assiduously than Southampton, and they're supplying England with more than their fair share of young talent. Also, one of the most notable England players of the past decade or so, Frank Lampard, went to public school. So it's a typically ill-though-out argument by an MP.

Maybe we need more 'posh twats' who don't see an offer of 10,000k a week and go off the rails almost immediately

It's not just ill-thought out, it's not accurate either.

My daughter watches "I'm a celebrity", and last night I caught some of it (not by choice, I hasten to add)

In it, Wayne Bridge was explaining to some Geordie slapper (apparently from Gogglebox) about the Christmas football schedule & how he hadn't had a "proper" Christmas day for 14 years. She was gobsmacked and went on to comment how being a footballer wasn't just a job, it was a passion, and how she admired Wayne for how much he gave to it.

He obviously didn't mention the remuneration he gets for not getting shitfaced every December 25th, and in fact let her go on about her pipe-dream of how her new found "celebrity" status might, one day, help her raise the price (£20K) of a new caravan for her mum & dad, without even cracking an ironic smile.

She's nowhere near as dim and naive as she makes out, and she's probably going to win.

Which becomes ever more likely when she pretends not to know how much footballers earn, and delivers "my little dream" bollocks about buying a fucking caravan.

She's already had a gig on Capital and released a slimming DVD, which is why she's earned several hundreds of thousands of pounds in the last year alone.

I believe that Jimmy Savile had a fucking caravan. After listening carefully to a bunch of people who suddenly remembered important things from forty years ago, it turns out that he loaned it to anyone else from the BBC, but barred commercial broadcasters, who were anyway far too immersed in studying St Augustine, discussing Pascal and/or making quiz shows.

I seem to remember that Louis Theroux went to stay with Jimmy Savile in his caravan in the documentary he did some 10 years ago. I think the caravan was in Glencoe. Jimmy broke his leg rock climbing, and he was more concerned to get the story to the tabloids than he was to get the leg treated.
