Liverpool reportedly failed with a late £19m bid for Atletico Madrid’s Simao Sabrosa before the transfer window slammed shut last week. The claims, made today in Portuguese publication Diario de Noticias, also hint that Rafael Benitez has been desperately trying to lure the talented winger to Anfield since 2005 when he was at homeland side Benfica.

The 29-year-old, who has eleven years of experience at international level, was also reportedly approached by Juventus, Lyon and Paris St Germain before stubbornness on the part of the Vicente Calderon forced all suitors to give up hope of sealing a deal.

Seems rather excessive to me. Good player but nowhere near what we need (cough cough - David Silva).

In the media, doors aren't just opened any more, but are always "thrown open". Nobody just asks the simple question "why" - it's inevitably "why, oh why" nowadays. Exaggeration has become standard, and unfortunately too many people are imitating it.

As for the story itself, of course it's pish.
 
He's shit. Such an average player - I'd rather stick with the wingers we have and save 19 mill than spend it on this player.
 
I vaguely recall hearing about a Simao bid (can't remember if we were the club named) the other week. Maybe there is some truth to this but the figure of 19M is certainly way off.

How can there be any truth to it? We had to scrape together a load of spare change to pay for Zorba. Do you really believe Rafa had £19m (or even half that amount) in his pocket and somehow didn't get round to spending it?
 
It's made up shit. The Atletico DoF said Juve bid 19m and we made an enquiry. Not sexy enough though.

How can there be any truth to it? We had to scrape together a load of spare change to pay for Zorba. Do you really believe Rafa had £19m (or even half that amount) in his pocket and somehow didn't get round to spending it?

Maybe we do have the money for a winger but Rafa decided rather wisely not to spend it if he doesn't get one of his top targers? I'd rather wait untill January than make a panic buy near the end of summer window.

Its to emphasise the absolute and irrevocable nature of the window's closure. One second its still open, the next its too late. You have to slam it ... or Babel would be trying to squeeze out.

I had re-phrased my first comment of "..get through the crack" precisely to avoid such comments!
 
We dodged a bullet missing out on him years ago. He's always been crap apart from that 1 beaut he got against us.
