Well, Gerrard's contract runs out in 2 seasons, but I think there's no way we'll be selling him or that he'll be asking for a move at this stage. So I see us maybe extending his contract for a season or two.

But what do we do with these guys?
- Glen Johnson (28)
- Lucas Leiva (26)
- Stewart Downing (28)

Johnson. I'd like us to see us put him on a new contract with a lower base pay but more performance-based incentives adding up to a better package overall if he meets those targets. I'm not sure he'll like that though. The leverage we have is that he already earns a pretty hefty wage I think, and there might not be that many clubs who can or are willing to pay him that much on a new long-term contract when he's 29 or 30.

Lucas. Renew.

Downing. I'd have kicked him out before December, but now that he's showing some consistent, good form, I'm okay to keep him on for now. I think he's more affordable than Johnson, so we could end up selling him in the next January transfer window. Even if he gets off to a flying start in the new season, I'd still contemplate selling him instead of renewing his contract, provided we're assured that Sterling can fill the gap.

No chance of getting an established England defender to agree to those terms.

IF we get £10 million plus offers (possible more for lucas) we should consider them, even though I like Johnson.

Depends what they want as well as what we offer. Lucas shouldn't be an automatic starter in 2015 and his wages should reflect this, ditto Downing.
