Play-offs

If you're English, and a fan of nothing other than Premiership Football, play-offs might not mean anything to you.
However, as a Rugby L fan and a Football fan now based abroad, virtually EVERYTHING is decided by play-offs, not a League format.
Will the Prem ever follow suit?
There are squillions of foreign posters on here, squillions of American sports fans, some Aussie residents like me ... virtually all our Sports are determined by play-offs. Just not the Prem.
Now, whatever Sport you follow, when the play-offs get brought in, you immediately think 'money-spinner' or 'best team no longer wins' etc. but, despite all that, who hates the play-offs? Not me.
THEY ARE SUPERB, IN EVERY SPORT.
After experiencing years of play-offs, handing over a trophy at the end of a league campaign seems a bit pedestrian. Those old arguments about it being unfair disappear after a year or two.
If we win 3-1 at Derby and Man U lose by less than 2 goals at Scunthorpe, the title's Notts Countys.... Or ... we play Man U at Wembley in a one-off Grand Final in front of 90 thou. The games are always good and the tension is ridiculous.
Plus, it IS a money-spinner, ha ha. So, will it ever happen?
Personally, I'd have it tomorrow. However, I think too many Football fans dislike other Sports to see the good points of them. Not sure.

The team who finishes top of the league is the best team in England.

I wouldn't have it any other way.

Nor would I want to 'win' the league from finishing forth, third, or second.

Well we'd have probably won the title in the last 20 years with play offs so on that basis, I'm going to say yes.

No, fuck that.

The league is exactly that. The best team will ALWAYS win the league, no question.
The best team may not win a Play-off. I remember crystal Palace appointing Ian Dowie and they put a good 12 week run together, that's all it was, and where did they end up? The Premiership. And where did they end up the following year? Back where they belonged.

This is what the cup competitons are for.

Or worse, win the league over the games played and then lose it on a play off.

The League format is one of the things that sets the Premiership apart from all of the other sports... playoffs tell you who the best team was at a particular point in the season, not the best team over the duration. A team could be top from start to finish, lose their best player due to injury and lose the title as a result... it might not always be dramatic and the end of the season, but it's the right way to decide who finishes as the top team each year.

It could be considered akin to the Champs League. If the European Cup still existed, we wouldn't have been in Istanbul in 2005 to win it.
We certainly weren't the best team in Europe that year but doesn't putting yourself in a position to strike at the best and prove yourself make it worthwhile? And wasn't it the best experience we've all had?
It wouldn't have existed but for play-offs.

Yes but that's a cup competition, it can afford the luxury of not always having the 'best' team win it, it's part of the script. You can argue that teams finishing fourth shouldn't be in in and that's fair enough, but as a concept the idea is perfect.

The league's a different matter entirely, and there's good reason as to why none of leagues have gone down to road.

Yeah, the cup competitions fulfil the same role as playoffs do in other sports.

Why do we need to turn the league into a cup competition also?

You're right, that's a bad example. Having thought about it, the closest example I can think of to a play-off game in terms of actual intensity over 90 minutes is our game against Arsenal in 89.
Which obviously won't win the playoff system many friends. With us at least.

I think the Premier League have missed a trick with play-offs.

Fuck that. St Helens have been the best team in the last 3 seasons of Super League, yet have not won the championship at all due to the play offs. Joke.

Coz they're chokers.

Cos Leeds show up in a one off game after the full league programme has finished, play with a defensive negative gameplan, and also employ violent tactics beyond the rules of the game? That is more like it, Leeds are the Wimbledon of the Super League.

Like you, I'm a fan of Super League. Most here aren't. You're barking up the wrong tree though, as a biased fan does. Leeds are better than Saints, have been for 2 or 3 years. If anything, Saints are the master of the one-off game.

I know this is off the thread at a tangent but do you really believe that? Watch how Leeds play when they meet saints, they shut the game down and turn the grand final into a snore fest. Any match up of the 2 teams normally ends up with a low scoring boring affair. Leeds become cagey and resort to using discreet violence as they can't out-play saints. There ain't much between them as sides, Leeds are more flat track bullies turning all the Shite over by massive margins. Saints play a more attractive game in general, and have just been bullied in the last few finals.
And you want the Premier League to end the same way? Excitement? Excrement more like.

I don't think a play-off system will ever be implemented to the Prem.

In fairness though, its missing out, so are the fans. Play-off Football is absolutely unbeatable. Think about the games that are being passed by. Its a shame and the game suffers.
