Inter Milan midfielder Coutinho has spoken out about rumours linking him with a move to Premier League side Liverpool. The English and Italian media had covered news of an approach by the Merseyside club but the player himself has now spoken and said he wants to stay at Inter Milan.
Countinho is flattered by the interest but feels he has the trust of his current manager and would like to remain at the Serie A side. He has spoken to Sky Italia and the quotes have been picked up by Calciomercato "The rumours about the interest of Liverpool are nice, but my desire is to stay here in Milan. I do not feel I'm on the market, I feel the confidence of the coach and club. My head is concentrated on making the most of myself and to return to being strong."
It will come as a blow to Brendan Rodgers if the reports of interest were accurate. The Guardian said this morning'Liverpool have made their second move of the January transfer window with an £8m bid for the Internazionale midfielder Philippe Coutinho, though they may have to improve their offer to tempt the Italian club to sell.
Brendan Rodgers has turned his attentions to the 20-year-old, who has one senior cap for Brazil, having grown frustrated with Liverpool's prolonged attempts to agree a fee with Blackpool for Tom Ince. Inter have rejected Liverpool's opening offer for Coutinho but negotiations are expected to continue.'
They weren't the only newspaper to carry the story and the Liverpool Echo said Coutinho was 'set to become Liverpool FC's second January signing'.
There was mention in that report of a rejected bid from Liverpool but an almost certainty that the club would return with a better offer to sign the player, the will of Coutinho himself was never thought to be an issue but his comments sound quite clear. If a new offer tempts Inter Milan then the club may have a job on their hands convincing Coutinho to leave.

Here's what Guillem Balague has to say about the transfer. I seem to remember that he has a soft spot for both Espanyol and Liverpool, so you could understand why he sounds so excited about this prospect.

Coutinho and the power of Liverpool in the transfer market

If Liverpool finally gets Coutinho for £8m, they would have got a bargain. I saw him play for Espanyol and he can produce magic in a small space, can run with the ball and dribble, opening up tight defences. He sometimes forgets a pass is a better idea than taking players on, but he has confidence in his ability and is quick. He can play in the left side of the attack in a 4-3-3, cutting inside and leaving Jose Enrique with the whole wing. Very interesting exciting prospect for Liverpool! Specially if the club study closely the reasons for his injuries, sometimes it is as easy as looking after the right diet as Messi would tell you.

Clubs are negotiating and Liverpool is very hopeful that the transfer will take place.

But...

There is always a but.

Coutinho told Sky Italia that he would prefer to stay at Inter but also to a key Liverpool player that he wants to come to Anfield. That conversation started the transfer process -you don't try hard for a player if you don't think he wants to come

I really hope for Liverpool and for the Premier League that the footballer is only protecting himself in case the transfer doesn't take place, because his arrival would give more glamour and talent to the league

Coutinho is acting all cool and shit but he can't wait to sign for us. Inter wouldn't have invited a higher bid for him if they planned to keep him. They're cashstrapped. He looks some player. We'll snag the lad.

What happens with Suso? This isn't good news for him.

Hopefully Suso gets a loan move, as imo he's a great young player but not yet ready to be starting for us. I've always felt his main problem would be finding an ideal position, because his 3 best attributes aren't really compatible with a single position: brilliant long passing, imaginative short passing, and great trickery and close control.

His dribbling is ideal for the wing, but he's got no pace so that's a major problem. His long passing game is ideal for an Alonso style role but he's probably too small to be really effective as a CM. He'd make a good no. 10 but that wastes his long passing a bit and he's also not got the best goalscoring record to be playing such an attacking role. It's all a bit of a puzzle really. Personally I think he'll probably end up as a deep lying playmaker, but he'll have to get a bit stronger to play that regularly.

He could play as one of the two advanced positions in a 4-3-3.

Something like the position Sneijder plays in, which'd allow him to highlight both his short and long passing games to an extent, and also his ball-carrying ability.

Something like this:

------------------DM
--------Suso-----------CM
----------------Suarez
---Sturridge-----------Sterling

Yeah, I'd agree with that. The lad has bundles of ability but IMO he's not quite ready yet. Get him out on loan to a decent footballing side and see where it takes him would be the way to go.

I think it's a bit harsh to say Suso has 'no pace'. He's not slow, he's just not VERY fast, and his game doesn't require him to go bombing off on runs, so you don't really notice what pace he possesses. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that he could play in the same side as someone like Coutinho; he's someone who will be at his best when he's high up in centre midfield pulling the strings for players like Coutinho. It's not easy to envisage it happening, however, because few teams in the premier league are that fluid and flexible to accommodate two, or more, such imaginative and positionally sophisticated attacking players. As Peter says, a loan move seems most plausible, but I hope Rodgers will prove to have the courage of his own convictions and seek to weave the two into the team.

I hope Suso gets loaned out. I think the only thing he's missing at the moment is the experience of the pace and physicality of the game. The only way he'll learn to overcome that is by playing more and he'll struggle to do that at Liverpool.
