Papadopoulos

He's barely played in the last 3 years, this seems like a lazy regurgitated link, maybe it's not though, and maybe we believe he's recovered from his ills and can get him cheap.

German media links Liverpool with fresh approach for beast defender

The German media have been talking up the Reds’ potential move in Kyriakos Papadopoulos…
Liverpool are reportedly tracking the progress of Greek defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos, who is currently on loan at Bayer Leverkusen from Schalke.

According to respected German magazine SportBild (pictured below), the 23-year-old has been interesting the Reds for several years, but we’ve so far been unable to make a move happen.

However, his potential availability has been brought to our attention by his recent loan move, with Schalke seemingly willing to let him leave after a falling out with club officials.
Despite his success so far at Leverkusen, there is no ‘buy’ option in his loan agreement, and he’ll be up for grabs come next summer. With his contract set to expire the following year, he could even be available for as little as €7m.
Schalke, now under the guidance of former Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo, are believed to have had something of a change of heart on the player, and now want to keep him, but they would be powerless to prevent his exit if he chooses to go, and Liverpool are reportedly poised to make their move.
We already have plenty of options at the back, with Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho, Dejan Lovren, Emre Can and Kolo Toure all vying for places, but Papadopoulos could prove a useful addition if one or more of those players leave.

Hasn't he terrible knee problems or something? I have heard he's ace via Talksport's Germany correspondent (someone who regularly holidays in a Bavarian hunting lodge and occasionally watches German football when he's there).

Tell him to call Jamie Sanderson a bad Bert bellend please.

Haha I already have. Sadly, he said he's quite sound, so no excitement there.

However, Gorst also thinks Tim Sherwood is all right, so he's quite clearly not the best judge of character.

Ol' Gorsty does have some contacts, though, in fairness. With regards to this transfer being likely, what do we reckon? He looked a great prospect a while ago, but injuries seem to have made a lot of clubs stay away. Also, what does it mean for our current defenders who are performing very well? A Lovren replacement? Toure? Not sure if I see it.

Lovren Replacment, I wrekon... he has been boss for Leverkusen this season.. why Shalke have gone we will take you back..

Though if we are going to continue with 3 at the back.. we will need at least 5 decent CB... Rodgers will probably want 6 (which sounds a bit mad).. 2 players for every position...

Why on earth do we need him? Okay, presumably we'll sell Coates and might lose Toure, but we're still well represented at CB. We've got Skrtel and Sakho, who are excellent. We've also got Lovren, who might still prove to be decent. We've also got Ilori, Wisdom and Lloyd Jones - and the chances of at least one of that three establishing themselves in the first team are reasonably good. You'd surely have to be not only excellent but completely injury-free to be worth adding to that lot.

If we stick with 3 CBs system, we need at least 5 reliable defenders in the squad. Not sure it makes sense to keep Lovren if he's not going to be a starter... Toure is leaving sooner or later, Ilori and Wisdom are question marks. Yeah, I would say we need one more quality defender.

Well that begs the question: which quality defender is going to come to sit on the bench? I hope it's not one who's barely able to get off the bench in one piece, like this twat.

We definitely need another defender if, as mentioned, Toure is off.

Wisdom seems to have fallen out of favour at WBA - fairly strong chance he'll be sold.

Can't really say anything about Illori until I see him play in the reserves.

Another decent CB - frees up Can to slot into midfield alongside Henderson or Allen.

I'm not sure Pappasnuffleupagus is the answer though.

The only possible justification for buying another expensive CB is if we're seeing a big clear out, which includes Lovren... and even then it'd be disappointing to see.

Why not? I know he cost us a bomb, but that's competition for you. Sakho isn't the best player in keeping injury-free as well. If Lovren isn't causing problems in the dressing room, and is working hard on improving his game (eliminating those early dive ins like Skrtel once did would be a start), I'd keep him.

If we stick to three at the back next season, I'd keep the same group of four or five guys who've now had half a season under their belt familiarizing with the system, and then add a youngster or veteran into the group. It's too early to dump Lovren.

Sure, but we bought him as a new defensive leader; if he is not going to be given that role here I get a sense he'd rather go somewhere else and become a leader there. Not sure he'll accept being a squad player.

.... but this ones being quoted as £5m - so it's a young, cheap player with talent but a suspect injury history.

For me it's more of a question if - is he any good & is he over his injury.

This guy has an injury record that would make Agger look like an Ironman. He might really be the bee's knees when he's available, but I would be very, very wary of this. He logged just 839 minutes (544 in the league) on loan at Leverkusen all season, with separate spells of injuries that took him out for 5 games - and a 3-game reprieve later - another 7 games. Add to that the 2 seasons of 10 league games and 4 league games before this one, and I'm not encouraged at all.

As for the low cost of the gamble - we've already got a 7m CB, CM and striker out on loan, all of whom were bought last season. It all adds up eventually.

I'd rather just stick with who we have, and take a long hard look in the summer at Ilori and Wisdom to see who is the better option as a RCB backup. Ilori has more pace and I think comfort on the ball, but Wisdom has more experience of defending out wide. This is the 5th CB anyway (assuming Toure doesn't return) so it doesn't necessarily have to be the finished product.

edit: Just checked, the two spells of injuries this season were not related to the knee problems he had in the past two seasons. However, apparently the two injuries this season were shoulder-related; not sure if it's the same shoulder or each shoulder!

I must be mate, I befriended you years ago...

There was definite Papa interest from Rodgers in the summer of 2013 but they wanted about £20m for him, and for £5m now he could easily come in and take Toure's spot. Could even take Lovren's for all the use he's been. Wouldn't be a bad move, still young.
