Pace

Watching MOTD2 and Lawro was commending us and what he and other pundits are saying we have real pace about us. Has the addition of Mane and Wijnaldum really made us that much faster or is it something else?

We lacked pace last season. It was obvious to everyone. Klopp knew it and signed Mane. He's quick. So now we don't lack pace.

Ditching one-paced mediocrities like Joe Allen and Lucas has helped too.

There's also the issue of moving the ball around more quickly, but you can't win trophies without some genuine scary pace in your attack.

Sturridge, Firmino, Origi and Mane are all quick in their movement and closing down. Lallana is faster than he looks, as he shows in the number of times he intercepts passes and closes down players. Coutinho isn't exactly slow. Fans have acquired a bizarre belief in recent years that only the most whippet-like of players 'have pace'. They're probably the same fans who were insistent that Frank Lampard was 'fat'. Someone from Lawro's background just sees a pretty pacy attacking set up and says so. Probably only Mane, Origi and, if fully fit and confident, Sturridge will counterattack with a long and fast sprint from deep towards goal, but Klopp's team is set up mainly to show pace over short distances as they press and pass and move. In that pattern of play we have one of the fastest-moving attacking sides in the league.

I have an irrational dislike of Lampard so he is fat.

I agree with you on your points though. I would like to add too that our players are also fast in thought too so sometimes it seems that they are pacier than they are.

I'd say increased fitness/stamina is playing a part, even Milner has looked to have a reasonable pace this year.

We lacked a bit of pace and Mané has added to that and brought real threat.

But it is pretty absurd to say that he is the only difference this year. Mané hasn't made Lallana, Firmino, Coutinho quicker has he?

The pace of play is much quicker and that pace is much more consistent this year. It isn't the pace of our players the opposition are struggling with, it is the pace of our play and how high we are pressing.

So far this season it seems it is our speed of thought that really seems to have picked up. Admittedly I saw zero games last year, so I'm comparing us to what went before, but it's been refreshing to see quick one touch passing that is incisive and meaningful.

We've often played our way out of trouble, or played it into the midfield with a player surrounded by the opposition, yet rather than them receiving the ball and being presented with no option other than playing it back to the CB or GK, there's been a quick layoff, followed by movement to create space for the next pass.

Given how often we've looked horribly static and devoid of ideas in the past, it's been a pleasure to watch

Genuinely quick players increase your options and generate uncertainty with opposition players. Having at least one or two genuinely fast footballers in your team is always a great bonus and allows slower players more space and options, as defenders don't know whether to stay tight or try and mark space .

It's quite obvious

Thank goodness you were there to point it out to us.

I would say we have acceleration over the 1st 10 yards more so this season than any other which is a crucial part of any game. Those first few yards make all the difference and we seem to be the most rapid in that department so far

It's not just pace that's important though, it's the ability to take players on, we have that in Mane where he can stretch defenders with his pace, while also running at them and causing problems. Firmino, Sturridge, Lallana and Coutinho are all capable of taking players on around the box, over shorter distances. It's one of the reasons we've won a few penalties so far.

Mané has been brilliant so far, and is beginning to look like one of the few players in his price bracket Liverpool have bought in recent times that could actually justify his fee - and if he carries on this current form then his fee will actually begin to look like a bargain.

But Mané is the only genuinely quick player that was added to the squad in the summer, and while it has definitely helped it's not the only difference this year. A full pre-season to get the press and transition from defence to attack right has made as much of a difference to the overall pace of our play - as has the increased recovery (and extra training) between games.

It's quite obvious.

I have an irrational like of Lampard. He seems like a decent sort.

It's not irrational at all. He is a decent person, even by the low standards of footballers.

He obviously has some major flaws - playing for Chelsea and being friends with John Terry - but he's nice enough to rise above all that, which is amazing really. Bright, too.

We're at our best when we're playing at full throttle and we seem to have gotten even better under Klopp. The problem often comes when we're a bit slower in our play - you start to see the awful dawdling on the ball, the lapses in concentration and the rest of it. I can't work out this group of players sometimes.

The quick transitions helps immensely and has contributed to our overall improvement but pace gives the team an extra dimension and can often be a big help for all the obvious reasons. I don't know where this idea that there is an obsession with pace or that anyone that isn't Bellerin quick is slow has come from. It's needless polarization of an issue.
