Sergio Ramos.
Have always thought his defensive abilities were suspect.

Sure the recent display against Barca confirmed my thoughts.

I remember telling my little brother (a madrid supporting Man U fan) before the game that their defence will be exposed against Barca.

Still Ramos is a world cup and European championship winner, but I bet if I review the games I'll probably find that Puyol and Pique/Marchena did much of the covering for him.

I think Ramos thrives against opposition that are on the back foot during most of the game. It allows him to attack and it's probably why he's considered a world class player by many.
But his positional sense is terrible and he's often caught out of position during the game.

Ramos is a fine player and had a decent world cup. He had a torrid 90 mins tonight and was made look a cunt but then so did the whole Madrid team.

Ozil
Pepe {the Brazilian CB}
Gattuso
Elano
Robinho

Pepe is really the only one I fully agree on. Besides he's Portuguese.

Özil is a really weird choice imo. He was a dominating player in German league and excellent again in World Cup. At times he's been brilliant for Real too and you have to remember he's only like 22.
I don't agree with Gattuso either. He's a bit like Carragher in that probably only the Milan fans really realize how valuable he was/is to them.
Is Elano even rated that much? At one point I actually thought he was underrated if anything. He's all but forgotten to the depths of Turkish league now anyway so meh.
Robinho is a brilliant talent but lazy and inconsistent so partly agree with you there.

I think Ramos is a good attacking RB. He's obviously no good when he's being asked to defend against wave after wave of attack without adequate cover. He's certainly not best utilized at CB.

Van Der Vaart is a traditional choice for this one, but he has proved a lot of people wrong this season.

I'm still not that convinced that he can be consistently good till the end of the season though...

Cheers Ak, I had a senior-moment when I put Brazilian instead of Portuguese. I agree Robinho is supremely talented but it's his attitude and lack of work ethic that make him a liability and therefore overrated.

Ozil is the one who could prove me wrong but when I've seen him he seems to NEED space to be effective whereas the top players can make their own space when/if tightly marked.

Yeah and to be fair he is Brazilian too but represents Portugal.

I agree Özil isn't quite there with the best of them yet but at 22 and in his first season abroad how much more can you expect at this point?

Well, I think Ozil at his best already is up there, though I accept he has to sustain it now. He's the one player I'd have signed in preference to any other from the last World Cup and I'm mightily relieved the Mancs didn't get him.

I agree. He's a lovely footballer.

Yeah his form has been a bit patchy at Real but already he's been brilliant at times. And as I said he's a 22yo playing his first season abroad so what do people expect? Real isn't the easiest places to really stand out either(or even take a regular spot in your first season) with so many stars to compete with.

It would have been horrible had he gone to Scum. He's just the kind of player they need too.

I knew there was someone I was forgetting - I just don't see what the fuss is about.

Does Sweden not have any football teams anymore?

Watching Swedish domestic football is as entertaining as watching paint dry. It's too defensive and there's no pace and definitely no technique. It's largely because of an outdated football philosophy. It's changing now at grass root level, but it's gonna take a while.
I like AIK cause some of my friends play there, but I support Djurgarden's ice hockey team. It's kinda like supporting both Arsenal and Tottenham. It just proves that totally uninterested in swedish football.
