Coutinho...

Big Big season for him this coming season. Has the ability to develop into a worldy... If Suarez goes and he ups his game together with bringing the right signing's in, we should do decent imho..

Where does Coutinho fit in with the signing of Lallana ?

Keep Coutinho in the number 10 role with Lallana out on the left.. ?

I'm looking forward to us being in a situation where we don't have a best 11 and we pick players based on their current form.

If suarez is going maybe coutinho will be in a front 3 with studge and sterling. With lallana, hendo and gerrard as our midfield 3.

He'll get enough time to prove himself.
I'm not really convinced that our "midget trio" will get it done.
Sterling - Lallana - Coutinho

He's got to pull his finger out. I've always been a big fan but he frustrated me a lot last season. Slow to get into games that he should have been controlling from the start, sometimes anonymous in a few of the biggest games, and just nowhere near as dominant as his wonderful talent demanded. He should have played his way into contention for the Brazil squad this summer - it's not exactly stuffed full with genuinely imaginative players - but instead he faded away. Fingers crossed the extra competition pushes him on, because he's a glorious player to watch at his best.

Being brutally honest, I dont think our best eleven would have Gerrard in it next season. If that happens I can imagine Hendo/Allen and Lallana all playing deeper than they normally do.

Coutinho's best position at times last year was in the midfield as more of a number 8 than a 10. He's a bit of a liability defensively but he proved to me at least that he's willing to fight for a tackle and when the ball. His dribbling and his passing are his biggest assets right now and I think he's most dangerous as a number 8 picking it the ball up deeper and pushing the counter attack himself with the ball at his feet. Most of his best passes seem to come from this kind of range as well. Essentially long term I think his best position is farther back than the 10 or as a winger.

He needs to actually try harder. He's got the ability to dominate sides with his movement and passing, yet so often games pass him by

It's so frustrating

I suspect that part of the rationale for signing Lallana is the lack of consistency from Coutinho last season. Playmaker is a hugely important role and we've seen games last season where Coutinho would have an indifferent game and we actually struggled to put meaningful attacking moves together. Lallana, who is a lot more mature as a player, should be an insurance against that happening in the future.

Obviously they can play together too, with one in midfield and another on the wing (and possibly switching places at will). I think Lallana is a bit more confident finisher and Coutinho is a bit more dangerous passer from deep, so my guess is Coutinho will be the one playing deeper most of the time whenever they play together.

Why?

He was absolutely key for us last season when he was moved back on his own, i don't think we would have gotton near the title if that hadn't of happened, whats Liverpool's win rate with Gerrard playing that role?

Gerrard won't be getting dropped any time soon and nor should he, he will get rested more next season and hopefully he doesn't have another slow start to the season.

The thing is he replaced Lucas...that was always going to be good for us.

But I think some other player who is not Lucas will be able to step up and do a better job than the Captain.

See where you're coming from but I'd put it slightly differently. I don't actually think there's such a thing as a single best eleven any more - for a variety of reasons the best selection for any one game is less likely to remain the best eleven for the next game than it used to be. What I *would* say is that that eleven for any given game is now less certain to include Stevie than it has been in the past.

I think the key was that we overcame this blindspot, where we thought we needed a solid DM in every game, I think using Gerrard in alot of games showed that we didn't and that it helped us maintain possession.

If you watch the games against the big boys though, one of the biggest flaws that was exploited was the lack of discipline in the middle, Gerrard pushing forward through instinct, losing Henderson to suspension against Chelsea - even he is there more because of his athleticism than his actual ability to sit and protect, he does more of a Masher style job in chasing and harassing. We need someone who could ideally do both, which is perhaps where the athleticism and natural defensive inkling of Can might come in, in the long term, or at least as an alternative for certain games where we're getting exploited and carved open on the break.

Does not compute, i think its mad how we can underestimate Gerrards influence last season but there you go, we all see things differently.

It's hard to say for sure until we've seen his haircut when he returns for pre-season.

But without having Suarez to accommodate in the team, both Sterling and Sturridge can be pushed up front as genuine attackers therefore leaving room for an extra midfielder in Lallana.
