So we have no VVD, no Keita. But clearly there's money to spend.

But more pressing to my mind is Can's situation, Klopp said last week he was confident in Can signing a new contract but we only have four weeks to go before we enter the territory that we lose him for nothing.

Coutinho leaving seems unlikely right now (for me because Keita isn't arriving)

We've missed the boat on loads of alternative signings because of our fixation on VVD and Keita.

We're in a bit of a bind right now - do we hang onto Can regardless of contract status because we need him or do we sell and try to get another replacement ?

Should we look at alternatives to Keita ?

Should we just keep Sakho and leave VVD alone ?

I think we'll end the window with more questions than answers.

If we cannot buy either Keita or VVD then of course we need to look at alternatives. Only a total spastic would believe or claim that there aren't any other possible quality alternatives, and we need to improve the central midfield and also central defence, as everyone knows.

And Sakho can fuck off.

Even if Coutinho does stay, if we start the season with only Salah as a major signing, we've fucked up yet again and failed to reinforce the squad in every vital area.

I'd like to think that due to us getting stung with the press earlier in the window, there's significant work done in the background but there's just a complete media blackout on it. Whether that's VVD, Keita, or alternatives for both, god only knows.
Like you said, the money is there, FSG are backing him, so I think there will still be players coming in (and leaving). I think Salah was 3rd or 4th choice for Klopp, so might end up a bit further down our lists with any new players.
Not sure what's going on with Can, he might be pulling the old McMannaman/Owen special.

We rolled the dice with Milner last year instead of buying someone. Gamblers will always gamble, it's pretty obvious Klopp is going to let it roll again.

when fsg slapped a 30 million price tag on sakho at start of the window, a lot of people were surprised. Similarly the price for markovoic was circa 15/20 million. fsg knew the market was inflated this summer for players.

however they seemed unwilling to apply the same principle’s to players we are trying to sign. That is poor management.

Do you think we won't pay the asking prices for VVD and Keita?

We wont pay what it takes. so we either carry on talking to the club in the hope they shift their position or make them an offer they cant refuse or we move on. the opening keita offer was low ball and we wasted weeks.

It was low ball? 57 M pounds or so for a player with not much experience from big leagues, which it is not a bidding war for? It is a ridicoulous high opening bid but at least it was backing Klopp's wish to buy that player.

If you look at it from their point of view, the Champions League money is no longer where the growth is, you can make far more from the transfer fees. If we don't sign anybody, we won't get into the top four, and we'll be forced to play a bunch of youth players on the biggest stage. The returns generated from selling them off next year will far outweigh the pauper returns we'd have made from getting into the top four. If there is one thing the lizards are good at, it's selling off our squad players at good prices, they're up there with the best in the world. They fucking sold Lucas, for actual money. It's difficult to blame them for playing to their strengths.

The actual gobshite that works for the actual Scum of 6cm.

Clicked on to Woland's under-post thread "Brendan's predictably shite predictions" which gave me a few laughs. None of us were too close as it panned out but me and a few others had Origi as top scorer and Grujic as the surprise rising star in the Premiership which didn't work out too well...although Gene Hughes takes the top prize with Klavan as the big surprise to the league!

Dreambeliever had Conte as the first manager to be sacked while Ryan made only one prediction which was that Chelsea would end up out of the top 4. Hmmm

Rurikbird was surprisingly out with nearly all of his predictions but Woland is right, Brendan nailed it with his shite predictions setting the standard for most of his posts last season.

We should start a new thread with the same questions for 2017-18

These all lead me back to my previous concern over the calibre of our Sporting Director and the background works of the scouting/transfer committee.

If we don't sign alternatives, why is it necessarily (only/mainly) Klopp's fault? Where are the alternatives? Who suggests (most/all of) them? Are they good enough? Could it be that Klopp rejects the suggested alternatives (unlike how Rodgers 'accepted' Balotelli)? Do the transfer committee agree with Klopp's choice of alternative signings (if any) readily/skeptically (because of the reports/figures from their own sets of dossiers)?

All excellent questions and I'm not convinced those at the club even know the answers.

Like all people, those at the club are bound to be lazy, incompetent, and have the sole talent of being able to fake their job. It is no surprise that early in the summer when Klopp was in the office more breathing down everyone's neck we were more active and got a few deals done. Now that Klopp is away with the players and at games, there isn't the same pressure upon those in the club, so they're sat there with their feet up occasionally answering the odd email "Yes boss, we're working on the deal, will keep you updated", then off for a cig and some tea. Cuppa tea cuppa tea. Fucking dickheads.
