One Man Teams - A Myth or Reality?

They say it takes a team to win a League, but over 25 years of watching the game, I've never seen a team carried by one guy as much as the Scum of 07/08/09.

Liverpool have been infamous over the years for their supposed reliance on 'one man shows.'

Would Scum still have won their last 3 championships without Ronaldo? Would Liverpool have won the CL without Stevie G?

One Man Show - Myth or Reality?

There's numerous examples of one men teams throughout the years - Juninho at Boro, Le Tissier at Saints, Gerrard for us, etc - making one man teams a reality, at least in the eyes of the media. But I find the term "carry" is particularly harsh, as are the negative connotations with being a 'one man team'.

Teams are designed to get the best of our their best players, which sometimes comes at the sacrifice of their team-mates - although in our particular case it's Gerrard who's been shunted about - and there's nothing wrong with having a system in which one player is designed to shine.

Sometimes you think managers are getting criticised for landing or developing a top player.

it's utter bollox.
the defense has to keep the ball out the next, the midfield/attacker has to give said one man show the ball. when people label a team 'a one man show' it completely pisses on the chips of the other 10 hard working players. you win as a team and you lose as a team.

fa cup final - the michael owen show
had it not been for sami or handchoz the contest would have been over long before owen got his first goal, but for the defense owen's goals would have been mere consolation strikes

CL final - the gerrard show
the entire back line (yes including djimi) repelled wave after wave of milan attack, and what dudek did bordered on miraculous. smicer's goals was crucial.

you get players that are the most important in the team but to ignore the efforts of the other ten players is just wrong.

Reality.

It's stupid to take the argument to the extreme of "well, there are 10 other players out there, how can it *ever* be true?!?!". A one man team, for me, simply means that the team has an unusually high reliance on one particular player to make them perform.

What would France have achieved in the last World Cup if they didn't have Zidane pulling the strings?

WorldCup 86 - Maradona, close to one man team as I remember or maybe I was too young to remember others ?

Is correct. That team was borderline poor. He absolutely won that world cup single handedly.
Anyone who thinks differently doesnt remember it properly.

He pretty much won Seria A on his own with Napoli too.

If Maradona hadn't been a blatant cheat was a far bigger cause of that defeat. That and a glaring miss by Lineker.

unfortunately blatant to everyone but the ref

The scum have been a one man band for a couple of seasons, but for many a moon they've been a one man band - but they just have a knack of replacing him when he goes. Question is, will they be able to replace the pace and goals of the waiter?

We have relied on Gerrard far to heavily for quite some time, but thankfully we got Torres in.

I really worry about that.

We'd be back at square one if we didn't have Stevie G. It's like a godsend that we have 2 world class winners on the same side, something we haven't had since the team of the 80's.
