in answer to your question I think the holding midfielder should always play in front of the CB but its the job to push up and therefore push the holding midfielder closer to the attacking midfielders. mash and momo did a decent job pressing deep in the opposition half but I prefer the holding midfielder to perform his role like alonso, i.e. dictating play from a deep position.
