Olympiacos Club of Fans of Piraeus (Ολυμπιακός Σύνδεσμος Φιλάθλων Πειραιώς)
That's a bit of a mouthful. Founded in 1925 in the port city of Piraeus. Some might say Athens but to them there's a difference! Greece's most successful club with 39 Greek championships, 25 Greek cups and 4 Greek super cups. They've won the title 14 times since 1997.
Like Liverpool, Olympiacos suffered the tragedy of a stadium disaster. On 8th February 1981 in the Karaiskakis Stadium 21 supporters lost their lives in the gate 7 section of the stadium. There are still debates over what caused the disaster, one report says that when the fans were rushing out of the stand to celebrate the 6-0 win over AEK Athens some fans lost their balance and fell on the final steps. Dozens fell over one another and got trampled by the unsuspecting crowd that were rushing down behind them. A lot of Olympiacos fans also follow Liverpool closely as they feel a connection between the two clubs.
Gate 7 is the section of the stadium where all the hard core supporters sit. If you're ever in Greece you might see Gate 7 written on the walls in red, sometimes over the top of (or underneath) a green Gate 13 (this is the section were the hardcore Panathinaikos fans sit in their stadium). Even in matches when the stadium is 90% empty these sections will always be full.
The derby of the eternal enemies is the name given to the local derby between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos. They're a melodramatic bunch the Greeks.
I'll get round to posting about the current team later. I can't be arsed now!
