Nuri Sahin

The reaction and diagnosis is quite typically misplaced - 'he can't adapt', 'he's a shithouse', 'he's tidy and good in possession but offers little else'.

That's really not the issue. Yeah, he's looked a bit rusty, and who wouldn't, having played just 4 games last season, and coming into a completely different league. But the real issue is where we've been playing him most of the times - at the highest position in midfield. It's ridiculous. Anyone read that Daily Mail article on he says he hates playing the no. 10 role, and prefers the deeper position. I've been saying that for about 3 months now. And before anyone says that's making excuses, it isn't.

Remember Pires in the first six months. He was played out on the touchline, he was timid and tidy and did little else. A few months, Wenger shifted him a little centrally, and used Cole and Henry to provide width on the left, and hey presto, Pires transformed magically into one of the best attacking midfielders of the PL era.

Remember Silva in his first six months - played out on the wing, ridiculed for being too small and weak to play in the centre. I remember Brendan used to regularly rip into him - said he wouldn't cut in the middle. A year on, he's shifted to the centre, and he's the best fucking attacking midfielder in the league inspiring City to their first ever title win.

Six months, or in Şahin's case, four months, is way too previous to be judging a technically sound foreign midfielder coming into the league for the first time, and being played out of position.

Give him the year at least. And give him a run of games in the centre of the park with a holding player like Lucas or Henderson. None of this, he's too lightweight or he's a shithouse nonsense. That's the role he established himself as one of the best midfield talents in Europe as. And that's the only role he's going to prosper in.

Excellent post.

Excellent post Dmishra. Love the fact that people are writing him off as not good enough already. Jezzzeeeess.

I think he's certainly having some trouble adapting, but quality will out. He also scores goals!

Sahin is a class player thats struggling to find his feet. Not a new story in the Premiership. However with the emergence of Jonjo and Henderson making strides, Sahin's loan will be just that.

Some (good) players are just not suited to this league e.g. Veron.

Get rid in Jan and save the silly money we are paying him in wages.

Too early to tell, he may just be taking time to settle in, alternatively he may be one of those players that isnt cut out to play in english football. Im still of the opinion its the former, hes a quality player and he hasnt had much game time in the last 18 months so his sharpness and pace were always likely to be off.

No doubting he's a quality player, but some players just aren't suited to the premiership. I've seen nothing from him so far that says he deserves to be in the first 11. He can't be showing much in training either. I'd rather we develop suso than waste anymore time with sahin.

I'm not writing him off yet. I saw enough of him at Dortmund to know there is a quality player there.

If we're going to see the best of him, Rodgers has to play him deeper alongside Lucas in a 4-2-3-1.

Yeah I'll be interested to see how he does with Lucas helping to provide cover. He's a bit of an unlucky chap as well; thought he played well against Young Boys at Anfield, but then he was an unused sub in the next 3 league games. Then he gets back onto the pitch against Udinese, and breaks his nose in 11 minutes.

"I remember Glen Whelan gliding past him with ease"

As a Republic of Ireland fan, they are some damning words.

He has REALLY struggled with the pace though Macca. I remember Glen Whelan gliding past him with ease when we played Stoke.
I think it is fair to expect him to have performed better than he has so far.

Do you think the club will look the make move permanent?

Liverpool are weighing up a move to make Nuri Sahin's stay at the club a permanent switch.

The midfielder joined the Anfield club on a season-long loan from Real Madrid in a bid to gain regular first-team experience but has been restricted to just seven Premier League appearances.

Sahin recently returned to the Reds squad after undergoing surgery for a broken nose sustained during the decisive Europa League group game with Udinese earlier this month but has failed to feature in a domestic outing since an hour-long run-out in November's 1-1 draw at Chelsea.

But the 24-year-old could be set to stay and fight for his place at Liverpool with Madrid appearing unconvinced by his lack of opportunities since moving to England just three months ago, combined with an unspectacular debut season in the Spanish capital, where he made just 10 outings.

Under-fire Real boss Jose Mourinho had originally planned to use Sahin as a foil for former Borussia Dortmund team mate Mario Gotze, who was also part of their Bundesliga-winning side in 2011, should the reigning La Liga champions secure his signature but is understood to have since reconsidered.

It is a view shared by Bernabeu chiefs, who are prepared to cut their losses on the Turkey international barely 20 months since he arrived for a fee in the region of £8 million.

Despite approaching his mid-twenties, Sahin's permanent capture would be a move for longevity and echo that of winger Oussama Assaidi, also 24, who joined last summer from Heerenveen for £3 million.

However Madrid's determination to hold firm on their £14 million buyout clause for Sahin, whose current contract runs until 2017, in a bid to ensure a modest profit remains a key stumbling block.

Maybe he'll have a better second half of the season, but at this point I'd help him pack his bags up and get on back to Madrid.

Hope we sign him permanently. He has class. He hasn't showed it yet but he has class and we need to take this risk.

He's been out with a broken nose, but is now back in training. Maybe he's starting against QPR

We are in a transition phase implementing a system based on passing the ball around, and this bundesliga winning la liga champion is behind Jamie C in the central midfield pecking order... something is very wrong!

He has been a little hit and miss but how the fek Shelvey gets in ahead of him is a mystery.

I think he has more class than Shelvey, enough to sign on a permanent for the right price (which is not as much as those chisellers at the Bernabeu want), but to me Shelvey on his best form looks more effective than Sahin on his at the moment.

Different positions though Jules. Shelvey can change a game with his drive and determined nature, whereas sahin would simply evolve a game to our tempo.

Question isn't one or the other. Potentially could be a (granted not as good) alonso and Gerrard

I love how people think £10M is a drop in the ocean nowadays. We can't really afford to misspend £2M, never mind £10-14M.

^This. Sahin may turn out to be the next Xabi Alonso, but if we are the ones who end up buying him for an 8 figure sum he bloody well has to be.

They play in different positions so thy can play in the same line-up. Despite Shelvey playing like a twat I do think he has something about him. I'd like to see him play in his natural position as an attacking midfielder rather than in the deeper position he has been playing.

I doubt Sahin will want to stay though.

He's shown nothing to say he's worth buying on a permanent basis at all.

He has in the past.

I've expected more from him, but there's no denying his quality. At £8-10M he would be worth the risk, IMO, especially if he finishes this season strongly.

We should definitely sign him. He might have done nothing in (just) seven games for us, but so many people can't be wrong about him. Sign him.

Quite. The 4 month judging a player syndrome seems to be trending.
I'm not judging him as its still early days. Just saying that I think that a lot of people are wanting him based on what he's done elsewhere. All I care about is what he does in a Liverpool shirt and right now it's been pretty shit. Yeah a few nice touches here and there, but currently he's done nothing to say that he's worth buying on a permanent basis. He's been lightweight and goes missing in games currently. He's done nothing to say he deserves to be in the team. Hopefully that will change in the second half of the season.
