I've noticed Mark and perhaps one or two others mention going back to basics a couple times over the last few weeks, so I thought it'd be interesting to see what people would like to see happen on a wider scale than just the normal transfer market dealings.

So, if you were the new manager coming in now - arguable on a relatively short-term basis unless you really exceeded expectations - how would you go about making next season a success?

What would be your goals and targets for the upcoming season?

How would you a) convince certain players that the place to be is Liverpool and b) motivate the squad for the season ahead?

How would you set the team up? What would the emphasis be on?

Would you stick with zonal marking or switch to man marking?

And so forth and so forth.

If transfers come into it, assume a 10M kitty plus sales.

I guess 4th as a minimum, which should (hopefully!) be a realistic and achievable target. Hang on to both Gerrard and Torres by whatever methods necessary, from cajoling to convincing that the team is still good enough, using their loyalty to tug at the heart strings to offering them two cheeseburgers man.

S'pose playing wise, getting back to basics I'd just like to see them working for their teammates more, giving the man in possession options, pass-and-move and all that shit - it's not rocket science and yet at times we seemed to have completely forgotten how it works. Allow the better players to express themselves a bit more and play with more adventure, but mostly just try and get them playing as a team again, playing with a bit of passion.

I think whoever we get in needs to be a good motivator, as all too often that's what has appeared to be really missing.

Play the right players in their rightful positions - if he's here next year I'd maybe even give Babel a run out up front in preseason games and see if there's any possibility of him striking up an understanding with Fernando, because if that's even halfway workable that could really scare the shit out of defences - I mean, I know Ryan can be a donkey at times, and his attitude has stunk, but if him and Torres were up front together they've both got pace to burn, Torres is just unplayable at times, and Babel has the odd moment where he does something really quite good. Maybe, just maybe he might offer a bit of a goal threat, I dunno - probably hopelessly naive and optimistic, but buried deep down there's this hope that if the right person got hold of him, maybe they could make him work. Even if up front didn't work out, I'd possibly toy with the idea of him on the right every now and then, as I seem to remember when I did see him play there he was much better than on the left.

Yossi I'd tell to stop pissing about and just score the fucking goal already, Dirk I dunno - I think he can make a right bloody nuisance of himself out at right wing, and there are times when he looks every inch the player that other teams would be clamouring for, but perhaps in the interests of putting the square peg in the square hole it should be Maxi for right wing.

Dirk up front with Torres? I dunno, maybe. Can't really remember seeing it often enough to make a decision on how well it'd work. Depends on what's going on in midfield I guess - you'd be loathe to break up the Gerrard-Torres partnership, but then with Mascher gone (as we all assume) what would you play? A midfield duo of Lucas and Aqualani? Doesn't fill me with glee, but what else is there, unless you stick Gerrard back in midfield, still with Lucas and Aqua ahead, or switch to a 442 with Gerrard and Aqua or Gerrard and Lucas.

Christ, we really need a new centre mid.

I dunno, I haven't got any of the answers really. I just wanna see us play as a cohesive unit, work for each other and show a bit of fight I guess - I'm not sure the tactics are all that important when compared to the kind of attitude we're going out with

After viewing them up close I'd be looking to trim the squad down to 22/23 guys. Two for each position.
Clear out all the rest. I'd like to see a new ST (if Jovanovic isn't a done deal), LB & LM (I'm done with Babel)

The goal for the next manager, presuming it will be a short term appointment will be to consolidate the squad and try to build confidence amongst them.
For all the doom and gloom I think we have the quality to get back into the top four next season (injuries permitting).
With regard to setting the team up, I wouldn't know what an unknown manager is going to do set-up wise but I would hope that players will be played where they are most influential, many times last season these boards were lit up with complaints about Yossi on the left, Gerrard not being pulled back into CM when we really needed it etc etc. It bugged the shit out of me.

Motivate the team. Play players in their positions. Have a plan B and maybe even a plan C. Be a bit adventurous and unpredictable, especially with substitutions. Hold on to Gerrard and Torres. Strengthen areas in obvious positions, particularly down the left. And if attitudes and performances are shite, then throw in the odd kid for a game to Shake it up a bit and remind senior pros that they are not indispensible.

What would be your goals and targets for the upcoming season?

The goal for a club as big and sucessful as ours the TITLE should always be our goal regardless of if its just a temp manager or mourinho etc. I would put more of an emphasis on the premierleague and for the europa league i would try use more bench and reserve players to try give them experience and playing time. I would use this method for the carling cup and fa cup too.

How would you a) convince certain players that the place to be is Liverpool and b) motivate the squad for the season ahead?

I would convince them by telling them to believe in my methods and get them to give me input on their ideas of how they think we should improve and ask for their opinions on who they would like to sign etc. I would also let them know i plan on taking the club forward and that we will be challenging for the titles.

How would you set the team up? What would the emphasis be on?

I would try to implement the barca way of playing, as we have technically gifted players already and have a good spine of players so i would get rid of the deadwood and bring in players that can pass a ball and take players on. My emphasis would be on more attacking than defending.

Would you stick with zonal marking or switch to man marking?

I would go with man marking as i dont like this zonal shit benitez use to play. Mark the man, not space.

If transfers come into it, assume a 10M kitty plus sales.

I would sell the deadwood players like Lucas, Degen, Riera, Spearing, Plessis, Cavelleri, the greek, el zhar, itandje, darby and i would sacrifice dirk kuyt as he would bring in a few extra dollars. In saying this lets say $10mil + another 35 from sales. $45mil or so to spend i would bring in.

Jovanovic (free)
J.cole (free)
Javi Martinez (18mil)
Turan (13mil)
Felipe (10mil)
Wilson (4mil)
Niemi (free)

-------------------------------Reina/niemi---------------------------------

Johnson/kelly------Carra/Skrtel---Agger/Wilson-----Felipe/Insua

--------------------------Mascher/Martinez-------------------------------

J.Cole/Turan------Gerrard/Turan---Aqua/Martinez----J.Cole/Babel

-------------------Torres/Babel/Jovanovic/Nemeth/N'gog-------------

+ the bench so there would be plenty of options with talent throughout the squad.

My starting line-up would probably be

------------------------Reina--------------------
Johnson------Carra--------Agger-----Felipe
--------------------Mascherano----------------
J.Cole---------------Gerrard-------------Turan
---------------Aquilani---------------------------
---------------------------Torres-----------------

Bench: Niemi, Skrtel, Kelly, Babel, Martinez, Wilson, Jovanovic etc

I think I know how Ross feels whenever Rebel and Spidey start talking about finances.

I'm going to print off the above comments, stick them up on my wall at work, and just refer to them whenever I'm having dark days.

I would certainly not throw what we have spent a decade building up out the window and go back to basics. That is a full restart. Our set-up is continental. That goes for the first team as well as the youth teams. Lots of continental players in both camps. I would definately go on with a continental manager, as a new british manager, and a back to basic set up would require heavy investements throughout the club.

Basics - Players in their favoured positions or at the very least identifying a workable system to suit the players already at the club. Zonal Marking as per and then Man Marking from set-pieces.

We've added a couple of Brits to the mix to bolster the fringe of things and hopefully give us something for the future. To add to that I'd be doing my upmost to keep Stevie and Torres. Players who don't want to play for the club anymore, as seems the case with Yossi, Masher and Riera, we need to cash in on. Get players who want to play for us, on a modest budget if possible, so maybe buy young British or identify up and coming foreign players that are suitable for the league and what's required of them. Don't ask me to name names though! Just keep it simple.

We have a good back four but I think without the presence of Masher to protect them we need a strong commanding centre back. The Greek has done well but he had to be hand held through games by Carra at times last season. Maybe have a look at this lad KHL is always banging on about, or look for a British alternative.

Emphasis would be on a settled backfour, a three man midfield (Including Stevie in the hole or centre mid) with two natural wide players and Torres upfront. Essentially there's alot to be added with limited funds. A left back, maybe a centre back, a central midfielder, one or two wide players and a striker who can play as a lone man or in a 442 alongside Torres.

I don't envy whoever is taking over.

Yeah we've got loads of deadwood that needs binning. El Zhar, Plessis and co.

Does the 25 man squad of which 8 need to be home grown ruling begin next season?
