Fernando Torres could feature against Arsenal on Sunday despite not playing any part in Liverpool's pre-season preparations.

The striker returned to Melwood late following Spain's World Cup triumph and his time since then has been spent largely with the sports science team as he continues to recover from an adductor injury.

Roy Hodgson must now decide whether to throw his star striker into his first game since the final in South Africa.

The manager said: "Yes, there's a chance he could play. He's made a remarkable effort to get himself fit and ready for Premiership football. He's worked extremely hard in the two and a half weeks he's been back. I haven't ruled him out but I haven't ruled him in either.

"His chances were rightly being played down by the sports science people. They said, quite rightly, that in an ideal world he'd have a longer preparation period.

"It's quite simply a balancing job. Do we take the risk of putting him in early or do we hold him back and put him through a more strenuous pre-season programme?

"The player's feelings also have to be taken into account, so it's a delicate mixture.

"But the bottom line is yes, he could be considered for Sunday. The same goes for Pepe Reina."

I could deal with Torres starting on the bench, just about. Not Reina though. That would be a disaster!
 
Yeah but so could Lucas and Skrtl and Babel and all them other wankers. I don't think there's been a good enough cull.

And yeah, I said it. Skrtl. I said it again. Someone had to say it.
 
I guess these sports science peoples job will be judged on how we cope with injuries this season (and obviously how they have advised the manager).Hence I expect them to advise him that Torres really shouldnt play until at least the start of January or so... This way they will not see him injured until January. Expect also that most of the players will be advised rested throughout the season so that we will end up with very few injuries as well as trophies.
 
What's up with Pepe Reina? Haven't heard him being injured at all, he hasn't played for a good while so what's the issue?

Kuyt played more throughout the WC and has had a similarly short pre-season.

Kuyt played more throughout the WC and has had a similarly short pre-season.

Kuyt isn't routinely fucked for half a season.

Nor did he get injured in the final
 
Pepe took a knock on his shoulder but has recovered so will start. Torres will start on the bench.

I can't wait!
