I am not one for conspiracy theories etc (although I still don't believe a plane hit the Pentagon on 9/11) but I had a very interesting conversation with an ex- prison officer at the weekend (he is now in the army and dating a good friend of mine).
He was working at Durham Prison at the time Hindley was there and he claims that all the prison officers in Durham at the time believe that Myra Hindley is still alive under a new identity.
Thinking back, her illness did seem to come on very quickly and she expired rather quickly too. 2 Prison officers were appointed to guard her in hospital but were relieved of duty unexpectedly the day before she died and were replaced by police officers.
Apparently she had not looked ill the week previous and had given up ciggies many years earlier and did not seem to suffer from any cig-related health problems.
According to this guy there was a cloak of secrecy around the whole episode and her illness and death did not follow normal prison protocol for such cases.
It sort of made sense as he was telling me because there was some support for her release at the time (albeit not from the general public) and it would have been difficult to release her under a new identity any other way.
I'm not saying this story is true but if I were an investigative journalist I think I would look further into this.
