Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has pleaded with the club's owners to buy new players.

Liverpool are out of the UEFA Champions League and effectively out of the Barclays Premier League title race.

Wednesday's FA Cup third round replay defeat to Reading has left them with just the Europa League trophy to chase.

And Torres wants the club's American co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett to back his fellow Spaniard and manager Rafael Benitez.

Torres said: "It's frustrating. We finished second last season. This season should have been a turning point for us - a chance to do something great.

"Manchester United sold Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo, while Chelsea didn't sign anyone. But it hasn't been. It's now the owners' turn. They have to sign players so that this does not happen again.

"If we want to compete with United and Chelsea we need a much, much more complete squad. We need more genuinely first-class players and we can't let our best players leave."

Torres, currently out with a knee injury, told Four-Four-Two magazine: "We didn't want to win the Europa League at the start of the season but it's a reality now.

"Now we have to win it. Anything less than winning the tournament would be terrible. We need to improve, we need to take responsibility and we need to get into the top four and win something.

"We have virtually no chance of winning the title now. Now we need to make the best of this situation."

The Star has run this story today, they've added the headline that Torres has threatened to walk if we don't spend.

This is probably the lowest ebb ever for me being a Liverpool fan.

Me too - from a purely footballing outlook perspective of course. Hillsborough and Heysel were lower points - but for different reasons.

Trust me, celebrating 4-4 draws, at home to Chesterfield in the league cup under Souness felt much worse.

I'm excluding those events form this post altogether.

There hasnt been a more depressing time as a fan. Never have the times of winning everything in sight been so far away, literally & metaphorically.

The seasons we languished under Evans were bad, but at least we were stillby far & away the most successful team in Britain's history & we were still amongst the top five teams in the world in terms of profile/market & none of us had any real rivals in that regard.

We now have owners who cant fund us, our most successful team title is all but gone & we have 3/4 teams who can challenge our global position. The one thing we had was hope for things on the pitch to be the catalyst to improve everything else.

Alas it wasnt to be, & now we look in bad shape in every way imaginable. It's trying times indeed.

Oh, in that case he wouldn't be told to shut the fuck up.

He'd be told to stop buying shit players, playing them out of position, be clueless about getting them to want to play football, and stop whingeing about how he hasn't had money to spend.

it's more "stating the obvious" rather than "absolute sense". A player coming out and basically saying the squad of players that rafa has assembled is shit really doesn't help and probably makes things worse, the players should keep the suggestions to themselves, so basically, shut it torres! (is that blasphemy?)

I was going to mention that and mention as well the similarity to a certain Michael Owen who said almost exactly the same thing back in 2003. I desperately hope this doesn't end in the same way.
