Money-grabber Barry has put cash ahead of his career, says Liverpool boss Benitez

by JOHN EDWARDS

Rafa Benitez labelled England midfielder Gareth Barry a money-grabber yesterday in an outspoken attack over the player's decision to join Manchester City instead of Liverpool.

Barry almost became a Liverpool signing last summer and looked bound for Anfield again this year until City won him over with a five-year contract worth £100,000 a week

The former Aston Villa skipper, who cost City £12million, insisted his change of heart had been influenced solely by the promise of more big-name arrivals at Eastlands, but Liverpool manager Benitez angrily rejected his claim and accused him of putting cash before his career prospects.

Speaking at a press conference for right back Glen Johnson's £17m arrival from Portsmouth, Benitez reflected on how Barry had forfeited a Champions League campaign by spurning Liverpool.

He said: 'When you are a player thinking of moving to a new club, you have to make sure it is for the right reasons, because, if it is just for money, you may make a mistake, like Gareth Barry did.

'I don't want to say too much about that, but some decisions this year have been shaped by those considerations and his was one. It is 100 per cent clear that it was down to money.

'If a player is motivated more by money than success, then maybe it is not a bad thing to miss out on him. I believe passion should be the main factor when you are signing a player.

'Maybe it's just me, but I have this idea that everyone in football at this level earns big wages and that money should not be the main thing. You have to enjoy your career, strive to improve and look to play at the highest level you can.'

Benitez admitted the transfer market had gone 'crazy', adding: 'It is all money, money, money now. We had to pay big money for Glen but we were signing a good player, an England player, and that is very positive. He had good offers from other clubs, but I could tell from talking to him that he wanted to come here because he felt he could improve.

'He knows we will work him very hard, concentrate on making him an even better player and guarantee his place at next year's World Cup finals. He has many attributes, but there are areas to work on, like making him a better defender.'

Benitez delivered a blunt message to midfielders Xabi Alonso, a target for Real Madrid, and Javier Mascherano, who is wanted by Barcelona, and made it clear there would be no easy way out of Anfield for either player.

He said: 'We signed Xabi from Real Sociedad when nobody had really heard much of him outside of Spain and renewed his contract two years ago, and Javier needed picking up when we brought him from West Ham.

'Both players owe a lot to this club and the fans who think so much of them. They owe a debt of loyalty and they know that.'

First Reina, now Rafa? Why are we talking about other teams players? It's wholly unnecessary and leaves a sour taste.

I dont mind it, what City are doing is bringing professional scorn (as it should). some things need to be said and if your captain of Villa and only leaving for a CL club and end up at Manchester City then the Liverpool manager has every reason to call you a money grabbing cunt all over the press.

Because he was asked about him and doesn't speak perfect English, and a simple quote is then spun into a sensationalist headline.

Rafa knows what he's doing, he's putting the boot in and rightly so.

To what end? What purpose does it serve?

It just makes us look bitter and is disrespectful to City. They may be throwing crazy money all round Europe, but I don't recall them doing anything to us (other than provide a home for our elderly has-beens in recent years).

Exactly.

We're moving ever further away from the values that hold our club stature. It seems as our grasp is being loosened on the trophy haul record were letting go of our values off the pitch.

We are Liverpool Football Club. We do not have to lower ourselves to this standard.

Didn't they try and tap up Torres recently?

I don't really mind it in this instance Keni, he's bang on. So was Reina, and if it ups the pressure on Masher and Alonso, so be it.

the purpose is to put the boot in, call a spade a spade and to help paint City as a bunch of merceneries. it might make others think twice about going there and brings some ridicule and reputational damage to them. I doubt he'll speak about it again but clearly City have caused us problems and probably not just with Barry but also trying to get Johnson and pushing up the costs

I've got respect for any club who does things the right way. This is just a spoilt kid throwing his weight around.

He is bang on,but that's exactly why he should shut up about it.

Everyone knows why Barry went there, some journalists have alreaedy writtn about that.

Rafa didn't need to put in his 2 pesetas worth.

I agree. It's one thing Benitez making a statement to say that money shouldn't be a player's main objective, it's a completely different matter to then name-check Barry as an example. I think that's dead wrong. It's up to Barry where he plays and what his reasons are. We all think we know what the main driver behind him going to City was but that's by-the-by.
I don't know if Benitez still struggles to articulate his English sometimes, and therefore says something he shouldn't, or whether he's just plain naff at dealing with the media on occasions.

I hope putting pressure on Masher and Alonso was Rafa's reason for doing this. Otherwise I can't see the point. Even then, I can't see how it differs from what he was complaining about from Ginsoak. Not Rafa's finest hour IMHO.

Barry could argue that with the amount of money City are spending its just a matter of time before they challenge for the title. Plus we did kind of leave him stranded last season.

Rafa makes a good point, I just wish he hadn't made it at all.

It's as if when he's got something niggling away at him, he just can't keep his gob shut.

He should join this place, he'd make a good poster. I bet he'd be in the RCDNW brigade too.

I am in the RCDNW brigade but i reckon he shoud have kept his gob shut, no need to talk about what could have been it just sounds bitter and also does a fairly good job of making us appear small fry when it comes to wages.

someones attacking our club FFS
bumping up our targets prices.I think they've made an offer for practically all of them
he's got every right to call Barry a sellout.
It's also a message to M&A If they go they haven't been pushed they are sellouts.
Whilst putting pressure on them to do the right thing.
Maybe we should just bend over T.I.U.T.A. and die with a fucking whimper.

The wages we pay suggests the opposite.

Quite. The player whose proposed transfer got the manager into so much hassle last summer, and subjected him to a year of pompous denunciation on here by people who purported to know far more than him about management, morals and football, and then snubbed him when, as promised, he returned with an offer one year later, is now the subject of yet more flared-nostrilled and wing-collared tut-tutting because he's simply noted that the player's made a money-motivated decision. If this was a movie, this forum would be an ageing Joan Crawford, dragging Rafa's Bette Davis around while waiting for social services to arrive. I'm just surprised that idiot Dalglish isn't being attacked for being so impressed with the devil that is Benitez.

I agree that the stick Rafa's taken for his dealings with Alonso has been largely daft, and I agree with his views on Barry. What I disagree with is his decision to express those views publicly, which wasn't necessary and cuts the moral high ground out from under any future complaints he may want to make about Ferguson or whoever else having a pop at us.

As for "attacking our club", I'm afraid I simply don't see it. Citeh, with their new-found zillions, are going to be after the best players, just as we are. It would be surprising if we DIDN'T share a good few of the same targets.

So what do you think that proves it a cheap shitty shot compleatly ignoring the facts.

Barry sold out He did an Owen.

johnson didn't he went to the club he respects.

I'm usually critical of Rafa's media outburst, usually because there's only a smidgeon of truth in what he says. However I don't see what's wrong with calling a spade a spade.

We knew this about Barry last year when he refused to hand in a transfer request. Apart from the fact I didn't really rate him, that was a massive indicator as to where his motivation was so I never wanted us to sign him.

I'm glad we missed out, I'm not going to criticise Rafa for calling it as it is now.

Rafa is absolutely right about Barry; but whats the point in giving interviews about it?

He's a Citeh player.

And the next time we get a player by offering more money than a rival, this is going to come back and bite Rafa in the arse.

Why? as you have said he's attacking the players morals, the point of giving interviews is to communicate with the fans To let them know you prepared to publicly fight for your club

next time a good player comes to us because we've offered more money.Hell will freeze over
and no one will give a monkeys anyway.

He didn't really give an interview about Barry, it was about Johnson. The remarks which have been widely reported were him contrasting Johnson and Barry's attitudes.

FWIW I thought Johnson gave the right impresssion in his first interview.

Whoever the interview centred on, those remarks about Barry weren't needed and, as others have said, have the potential to bite back in the future. Sometimes less is more.
