Who's up for this?

I've luckily managed to get to this one thanks to the help of The Count and especially Darkstarexodus.

(Big big chest bumps to the two of you bruvs)

We're driving up since the missus wants to see the Peak District and check out some shopping place in Cheshire and I'll be in the King Harry and NOT shopping. RE-SULT.

I hope some of you lads will be around.

Anyone got any spares? Looking for up to 3. I know its short notice but, if anyone hears can they let me know.

Cheers

Are you coming for this,John?

Thought it was on the Sunday so would have loved to have done, but as its Saturday I have family plans I can't break. Gutted.

I was in the harry on friday and they had heartbeat on the tv behind the bar. I couldn't stop watching, despite it being garbage.

Yup, i'll be in the Harry before and after, will be nice to see the lads again, its been a while!

I am officially pissed. That is all. Good night 😉

had more than four pints of Carling then? 😉

Though I can't take much credit.

I had to leave early.

No doubt I will pay the price for that in 3 weeks ;D

Avvy, I thought I left early, when I got back to my car the guy bollocked me saying I was 20 mins late and he should of locked up by now and i'm lucky to still have my car.

Oops.

Sorry we didn't stay for too long lads, still great to meet up with youse all, and thanks again Sunny for the tix!

So I’m back.

This was a pretty tiring trip, for several reasons. I usually book train tickets as early as possible, but I couldn’t get cheap tix, and the missus wanted to come along so we drove.

Why, you may ask?

Have I finally converted her into a fan? The answer is of course no, I have not. She is made of far sterner stuff than I realised. The reason is because she wants us to drive through the Lake District. So we get the cheapest available room, which is outside the Lake District, but only just. Chesterfield in case anyone’s interested.

Her Big Plan involves seeing the Peak District, me then going for the game whilst she does something or other in the city and then spending 2 nights in the Lake District, a place she hasn’t seen yet. Unfortunately things don’t go according to plan because we cant get a room cheap enough in the Lake District which is bloody expensive, and because her leave is refused. Being ever resourceful, she then decides we’ll bin off the Lake District and we’ll visit some horrible place called Cheshire Oaks which is about 30 minutes from Liverpool.

I had not anticipated this horror.

Some of you may remember the terrible time suffered in a dark place called Bicester Village; so when I was told that Cheshire Oaks was MUCH larger than Bicester Village, I felt very very depressed.

Thankfully, I was told that I wouldn’t be going and that she would be going whilst I went for the game.

Now you can see why I married this person.

The Peak District was beautiful, as was much of the drive through Yorkshire..beautiful fields of green and yellow flowers (what flowers are they?..the missus thinks it’s canola, and the only canola I’ve seen comes from bottles so I have no idea what they are)

Anyone?

They were beautiful though.

We do a bit of sight-seeing, which is nice..we drive past Baslow, Bakewell, and eventually stop by Matlock and Matlock Bath where the missus sees something she’s been longing to see in the forest..bluebells.

Considering we drove 30 odd miles to Walsingham to just see bloody snowdrops, seeing the bluebells was an unexpected and very welcome bonus.

Don’t get me wrong, they were beautiful.

But I’m not much of an outdoorsy person because that’s where spiders come from.

We end up doing a little hiking near High Tor or something, but then get tired and leave.

We set off pretty early for Liverpool, unfortunately traffic was pretty heavy (plus we always get lost using the satnav in Liverpool)..we find out that the room I booked was basically a hostel (which doesn’t go down well with the missus who likes en suite)..Im ok with those since I usually stay in hostels near the stadium when I go for games, but the wife is NOT happy. We make the best of it anyway.

So the missus wants to have lunch; it’s already 1pm by then and Sunny is already on the way to the Harry. So my options are basically to abandon the missus and head off for the Harry or have lunch and see her off on her way.

No choice, basically.

At about 1.26 I realise I’ve made a poor choice because there is a big fuck-off queue at the bus station.

If you’re reading this, MERSEY TRAVEL YOU ARE A BUNCH OF CUNTS.

There were no buses.

Let me rephrase that. There were LOTS of buses, but none going to Anfield; there are 2 or 3 No. 26 buses who drive around the station island and amuse themselves by looking at the long line snaking it’s way around, but none feel like stopping.

I eventually get onto a bus at 2.12 pm (would you believe it if I say I waited 45 minutes for a bus and then 2 came at once)

In the bus, Evertoare still 0-0..and one Indian guy behind me is talking to his friend in Hindi, ut I can make out 'come on Everton'..

Sunny's news when I got to te rry was not welcome...(as was watching Cunto break his duck later)..which spoilt the mood somewhat.

Sorry again for being late, Sunny..my fault..I get off the bus at 2.35pm and run for the Harry (well, jog slowly anyway – I’m not in the best of shape)..i cant remember if I have time for a pint as I’m trying to catch my breath, but I meet Sunny, Dougie and MLL/ECB/ IJG (henceforth known as ‘Iggy’) and we set off for the stadium.

Iggy was a really nice sort; and he looks a lot like one of my cousins.

We don’t have much time to chat though, as I’m so late and we head off to the stadium. One of my fondest things to do is to walk when the crowd’s really thick because it feels like I’m part of a Red Army marching off to Anfield. But the time we’re going it’s not much of a crowd, which shows how late we are.

I get to my seat, me forgetting for a minute that I was on the other side, the Centenary (or Kemlyn Road as the regulars still call it)..of course, one plus about not having had time to have some drinks with Sunny beforehand is that I had less trouble finding my seat. I usually have a more difficult time, but I blame the layout of the stadium. It has nothing to do with the several pints ?

So I settle down and look at the Kop; it’s packed of course, and the flags are fluttering, and it’s almost heaving. I quickly whip out my camera and take a picture (yeah I brought a camera, sue me).

It’s beautiful to be in the Centenary watching it, but I’d much rather be in that hive of people chanting and singing. The Centenary is more restrained, shall we say. I’m not knocking it too much tho; the 6CM Season Ticket is a fucking phenomenal seat and the view pisses on anything I’ve ever seen in the Kop end.

It’s just not home.

The match is just starting when this Japanese woman scurries across the row in front of me to her seat, of course everyone stands to let her in and my view is blocked.

Why must you do this to me, woman?

My time here is short.

The game continues.

And it is the best game I’ve ever watched us play with my own eyes.

Let me repeat that for emphasis.

IT IS THE BEST I’VE EVER SEEN US.

We’re moving the ball smoothly, passing well and everyone is on the top of his game. I remember thinking ‘what’s going on’?

My last game was at Upton Park, and I can’t believe what I’m watching. Yes, Brum were rubbish. But we’ve played PLENTY of rubbish teams this year and NOT won, and we’ve often lost. To see us cutting through them was phenomenal.

(I asked Sunny for the team news just before we left the Harry and when Iggy told me off his phone, I wanted to cry…I thought we’d lucky to scrape a win, but this had draw written all over it 🙁)

To be honest, it wasn’t smooth sailing at first, we deservedly took the lead and Maxi’s placement was excellent. He really does look to be able to read Suarez well, and we did let them in for a well. But once Kuyt scores, they’re done. You could see it in their body language, they knew it too.

That’s another thing I’d like to mention now; we’ve heard about how there’s more unity and togetherness now?

Believe it.

It’s fucking real. Before the game, Reina comes over and talks to Flanagan and then smacks him on the back of the neck to give encouragement, Suarez gives Flanagan a thumbs up when a pass is misplaced..and the lads are always quick to help each other when one’s in trouble..i hope this lasts…but it’s magnificent to see.

I will say that their fans were good too; loud and boisterous, despite watching their team get hammered. It’s not a nice feeling, watching your team get outplayed when you’ve travelled a hundred twenty miles to watch.

The Kop was actually a bit quiet, prompting loud jeers of ‘your support is shit’ (although it was a bit hard to make out) and ‘sing when you’re winning’..oh I LOVE it when I hear that song, you bunch of numbnuts.

It found it’s voice soon enough though; the Redmen made sure of that.

It wasn’t just the scoreline, it was how we were moving the ball..everyone seemed confident in each other, everyone seemed to know that other player wouldn’t let him done, and for the most part no one did.

Flanagan and Robinson were excellent again, very calm and composed…and with some guidance, could turn out to be excellent fullbacks. Skrtel did have some stupid errors today as well, one horrible pass to Carra along the backline being the most terrifying example, but for the most part was excellent.

There is a big difference in Skrtel when he plays with Carra as opposed to playing with the Greek. Carra was excellent, and hardly put a foot wrong. He played like the true leader, and marshalled everyone properly. I cannot believe how often he gets slated, but he is still our best defender.

Lucas and Spearing were both excellent; and Lucas dominated the midfield. He also had a few bad passes, but he was a colossus in this game. (I still can’t believe it, but its true)..as for Spearing, superb…a real tiger, and I really don’t get the theory many have that ‘oh you don’t need a fierce DM when you’re playing the weaker teams’..having a good midfielder smashing through the opposition when they’re trying to play the ball through to Jerome is something very very valuable.

Did anyone notice Jerome becoming more and more invisible as the game wore on?

I sure did.

Meireless was excellent, and the number of tackles he made were fantastic..i loved watching him come back and sliding through like some bald ghost to dispossess some Brum player, and he did this countless times.

This game was won in midfield, make no mistake.

Kuyt and Maxi were both superb, although Maxi didn’t do very much except score a hattrick hahahahaha..in all seriousness, he was excellent and reads Suarez well, although it’s more probably the other way around..Kuyt was Kuyt…sometimes fantastic, sometimes terrible, but yesterday he was fantastic..harried the opposition, brought the ball forward, helped defend..AND scored the vital goal.

It was his goal that that sealed the game, despite 3 more being scored later.

Those of us who mock Kuyt should understand that despite the possibility of us getting a more mobile replacement, we would be losing a lot of what he does bring. His attitude and strength is something important on the pitch. But let’s be clear, he’s past 30 and it’s something to address.

I love him though. There’s a reason why he so often pops up with goals when the chips are down, when many others would much rather be in the showers, when I would much rather be in the pub.

Reina was excellent, and you could see that he was playing with a lot more confidence behind this backline. I know many on here are disappointed with him, and I admit that I am too. But if he stays and delivers his best the way he’s done over the years I hope that goes some distance to changing peoples minds.

FWIW, I don’t think he’s playing as if he couldn’t be arsed aka Torres.

Joe Cole had a decent cameo, and he did show some flashes that he is a very good player..the writing is on the wall, but TBH I’m a bit sad about it…it could have and should have worked out for him.

And lastly of course, Luis Suarez.

The man was incredible.

Despite not scoring, and despite the phenomenal work of Lucas, my MOTM was Suarez..he was everywhere, and the Brum players could not get used to his trickery, to his movement..I can’t remember now, but I’d say Suarez had a hand in at least 3 of the goals..there was one run he made (which didn’t come off I think) where he ran to the right to draw off 2 defenders, whilst running he screamed at Maxi to peel off to the left because he knew Flanagan (I think) was about to pass, and Flanagan (who was excellent) sent a hard one into acres of space beautifully weighted for Maxi.

That was vision, which Suarez has in spades.

Wish he’d scored.

Believe me, we’re on the way up…and if Kenny buys well this summer, we’ll be looking SPECTACULAR next season.

I notice the Japanese woman with her camera and she’s recording the whole thing..i feel like telling her ‘ excuse me please use the ultimate camera ie your eyes which are better then your Nikon’.

My eyes saw much beauty on Saturday. (though I do confess to taking a picture of the scoreboard after the game)…as it tapered off, everyone was so happy in the stands..so much so when Carra skied one ball into the stands, he got loads of playful jeers and he responded with a big smile on his face..

I think they were all just so happy to be on the pitch, I wsa just as happy to be in the stands.

Oh, I know…there’ll be bad days..we’ll lose again..

But on Saturday, we all felt like a million bucks..and I believe we can really look forward to the future now.

Some of you may remember me coming up for one game where we were shit, and I was talking about some lad who was watching his first game..i felt so bad for him, thinking ‘this is what he has to look forward to in his childhood’?

I don’t feel bad for him anymore 8)

The game ends, and I don’t want to leave…but hey, the Harry awaits.

It’s become a big thing for me too; win lose or draw the Harry and good friends wil always be awaiting in the Harry..to bask together when we win, to commiserate and indulge in critical analysis when we’ve been shit (which I’ve unfortunately been a part of too often 🙁 )

But it helps.

So I go over, late again.

I had the bright idea of not taking the Walton Breck which is packed but decide to go the other way around Anfield Road.

Bad idea, it was even more crowded. I pass by the loads of fans stopping by the Memorial to take photos. And I fully understood how important it was for fans to take those photos. We want to have something tangible to take home from Anfield. Ive taken photos for fans at the Memorial, at Shankly’s statue, outside both gates..hell, I’ve even taken one for a Middle Eastern guy outside the Boot Room Café.

Yes, some fans couldn’t be bothered of course..In many cases they aren’t real fans, but just tourists doing the touristy thing in Liverpool.

But for some, it means THE WORLD.

We have our memories of course, of games at Anfield. But sometimes you want to have something in your hand to remind you, you know?

So when Knobheads make such Kingly posts like ‘you couldn’t possibly understand the feeling here being so far away’ you don’t feel so low. You can hold something and say ‘Yes, Knobhead…I’m far away now, but I still get it…and you never will’

Anyway, I’m back in the Harry…and I’m chatting with Sunny and Iggy and BOBBY!!!! YAY!!!

It’s all great, and then Sunny introduces me to someone new ie Summer Onions, who’s great too and we start talking about the team, though I cant remember what I said now, hopefully it wasn’t anything stupid..Iggy’s great too, though I think he was a bit harsh on Suarez’s ability to score goals...Iggy’s right to say that he was trying too hard, but the movement he made to bring people into scoring positions was phenomenal..Suarez might not prove to be our next Torres, but he might end up being our next Beardsley andthatwilldonicely.

I hope to see Dan and Iggy again.

Especially Iggy since he reminds me of one of my favourite cousins 8)

They both have to leave after a bit and I keep drinking; there’s a buzz in the place even though it’s not really full..you could feel it. Dougie is well up for it and introduces us to this guy from Dubai who’s flown up for the game (though he seemed to be more West Indian than anything)..and he’s great craic..we talk and we drink..and he ends up on the karaoke singing ‘Ring of Fire’…cue lots of people going DERDERDERDERRRDERRRRRRRR…Dougie sings ‘Wonderwall’ and one other which I can’t remember now.

Yes, I took my turn…Bobby and lager is never a good combination and I duet ‘Fields of Athenry’ with him, and I’m sure the King Harry will safely agree that I must never take the mike again. Ever. I must have drunk more than I thought though..I have to be PISSED to consider karaoke, but Bobby is very persuasive.

Bobby’s son was of the view that I had to marry a Scouse girl so I could stay in Britain, which was an interesting idea. Thankfully this reminded me that I had a wife who had been shopping in Cheshire Oaks for 5 hours and was on the way back to the hotel.

So I kept on drinking and chatting with Sunny and Co; after a bit Sunny comes by and says that I shouldn’t feel sad about leaving, because I’d managed to fulfil a dream I’ve had for 30 years, and not many had been as lucky. He also said we’d be having a blast on the 15th after Spurs, and that we’d be ending the season with a BANG.

I know I’ve said it before, but I consider myself very fortunate to have come here and seen these games, and to meet some really really ACE lads, and I’m going to miss it..still, it’s ending nicely, and it’s so great seeing the whole pub awash with smiles and good vibes after months of shrugs and gloom.

Thanks again, Sean..

Some may wonder how he manages to help so many; and it’s so obvious..he literally scours the pub and asks people if they know of spares..all for people for whom in many instances, he’s never even meet. It boggles the mind. But I’m so grateful that he does.

I casually ask him how many he’s sorted this season, and he casually says 40 or 50. He even says that it’s getting harder but brightens when I say it’s because we’re getting better. In November or December, you could get tickets at the counter 30 minutes before kick-off.

No more.

But think of it, that’s 40 or 50 people who’ve gotten to game who wouldn’t have if not for Sean. Then he goes off to look for tickets for Marquis.

St. Sean, the Bringer of Joy, I salute you.

As for us, we have a chance now, and whilst some may scoff at Europe, we belong in it.

Beat Spurs and we might get 5th.

4th is a big ask, but it’s not impossible..As Bobby said, he thought we’d be lucky to even reach 6th, and this was when we rotting during Roy’s tenure…think it was after Utrecht..we were shit, and yes, we had qualified for the next round but we looked tired and impotent and it was freezing and it was depressing..we faced relegation, having just staved off bankruptcy 2 months earlier.

It’s been 4 months since and it’s unbelievable how things are now..

Anyway, we’ve had loads to drink and eventually I decide I have to leave before the wife divorces me for not replying her texts. I bus back to the hotel, was a bit lucky since a bus came just as I reached the Breck.
Meet the wife and we have dinner and walk around a little; we’re both pretty tired and decide to skip the showers which were crowded.

The room wasn’t too bad; but it was the worst night I’ve ever had in Liverpool..at about 4pm there were loads of noisy patrons coming in and yelling and yakking..i waited for it to die down, it didn’t..i tramp out bleary-eyed..all the doors are closed and I don’t know where the hell the noise is coming from..i go back it starts up again.

This is fucking Groucho Marx.

I go to reception and complain; someone comes along and it’s as quiet as a church, he leaves and it starts..after a bit I can hear a woman in the corridor telling someone to shut up because they’ve been carrying on for an hour..it dies down but starts up and dies down.

The missus says I shouldn’t get riled up because we were young once too; but I’m very not sober, tired and I want to sleep.

We eventually drift back to sleep. But it was a very hard drive back home back to Norwich, with lots of stops..we stop somewhere off Birmingham to get some coffee and there’s a bunch of Indian Gooners…probably going up to Bolton (did they play at the Reebok or the Emirates)..i have to resist walking up to one and saying ‘please don’t choke today’..we all knew they would though..I find myself listening to Wenger on the radio somewhere around Corley and without a beat say ‘PISS OFF’..it only occurred to me later that I was referencing Kenny..though Wenger must get that a lot.

As for the missus, I’m not going to be able to turn her into a Red, but she understands me a lot better now though. She was happy enough after Cheshire Oaks, thankfully ;D

Anyway, this is the last one for a while.

I want to thank both The Count and darkstarexodus since I wouldn’t have been able to watch the Brum game otherwise; I remember feeling so jealous that he’d watched us tonk the Scum and hoped I’d see a great performance someday..(my only League win was against Stoke and we hardly pulled up trees then; it was Suarez that made the difference)

My last League game was West Ham, and I felt like a fucking Jonah..Sunny said that the idea of me jinxing us was bollocks but I never believed it until Saturday.

FUCKING.MAGNIFICENT.

The Count is also in my eternal debt because thanks to him, I get to finish the season with Spurs..and I hope I see a lot of youse there, it’d be great to finish with a flourish..I’m already having dreams of us tonking Spurs and pipping them to 5th (or even 4th?)

STOP IT.

Thanks again, Count.

See you all soon.

You could write a book with all these memoirs mate!

By the way, what i distinctly remember was you being in some form of shock that Lucas was actually good, it made me laugh.

Avvy - Mrs Avvy (and her clan) have an unhappy knack of dragging you to shit places you'd rather not go to, don't they ?
