Rafa Benitez: 'My Liverpool comeback in Istanbul was better than Barcelona win'
10 MAY 2019 • 5:00PM

Rafa Benitez is unimpressed with talk that Liverpool’s victory over Barcelona was their greatest comeback in Europe, and insists that winning the Champions League final against AC Milan in 2005 was a far more impressive result.
Benitez smiled as he defended his biggest success as Liverpool manager, but he is also convinced he is right, arguing that Liverpool were at home against Barcelona when they won 4-0 and his own team were losing 3-0 with only 45 minutes left to play in the final in Istanbul.
The Spaniard still has sharp edges, and although he was full of praise for Jurgen Klopp’s team, he could not resist pointing out the fact he actually won a final and a trophy when he was in charge at Anfield, with considerably less money to spend.

“My comeback was better, it is very clear,” said Benitez. “There has been a poll [on Sky Sports]. Come on, no chance the Barcelona one was better.

“You have 45 minutes, 3-0 against AC Milan, the best team, miles away from anyone, the fans singing at half-time, the Milan fans so happy, and then you go and you score three goals in six minutes and Dudek's save, and then you go to extra time, you go to the penalties.

“Better than that? Come on. I am telling you, a Turkish friend of mine that was here said, 'Listen, for one year, we were analysing this game'.

“Now, [Liverpool] you play a very good game. One thing is the comeback and the atmosphere, the emotions: no chance, that is Istanbul.

“If you win the trophy it would be a fantastic achievement after all these things, but I really don't want to talk too much about that. They've done really well in midweek with a great performance, but Istanbul is another thing.”

Benitez believes the results in Europe this week confirm that the Premier League is the best in the world, but he does not feel the fact all four teams in this year’s finals are English will usher in a long period of dominance for clubs from this country.

I think it was amazing,” he said. “I have to say congratulations to all the English teams, it’s a great achievement which has never happened in the past.

“The way the semi-finals went were really good games. The Premier League is the strongest league in the world now, with very good players and very good managers.

“If it is every year [that the English teams dominate] maybe it is a bad thing. If it is just one year, maybe not. I am sure the teams from the other countries will compete to be there next year.”

Someone wishes they could still win trophies...

Harsh, and I am sure he could if he had a better squad.

But Rafa is 100% correct in his thoughts. Don't care what people say about this Barca side, they just could not handle us in both legs, and we were the better team for 75% of the time that includes both games. I disagree with most people on how great that Barca team are. But our comeback was great because we could not concede in that game, but it was at home, and we had the full 90 minutes to do it in. Plus Spurs the next day had a comeback of their own which pissed me off.

Istanbul - I mean that Liverpool team that had - Smicer, and Traore ? - I know exactly what Rafa means. AC Milan were a complete team, and the dominant force in Europe at the time - there was no weakness in that team really. What happened that night was a real miracle and it was a UCL Final that we won. Let that sink in, and you realize there is actually very little to compare between Istanbul and what happened the other night against Barca OTHER than they were comebacks.

Rafa is a legend. Not only for making us finalists twice and winning it once. He still loves the club, and I will never forget this video and his tears

There's no need to explain it. No one in their right mind would put the Barca comeback over the Milan comeback.

Yes but the point is he does not, and is unlikely to get to that point again

This team is better in every respect than the 13/14 team. It's the best team we've assembled in the PL era.

Are they beter players potentially on paper? Maybe, but not as a unit. And not as far as results go. So No, not better IMHO
Mascherano, Xabi and Gerrard weren't good as a unit? You're kidding me right?

While Rafa coming back is another of your autism-level obsessions (it will never, ever happen and I strongly suspect he himself has moved on from the idea more than you have), up to a point it *is* unfortunate that he won't, given his disappointment at losing the job to begin with. He had to go, but it was a pity at the time.

All hindsight, but considering who came in to replace him, he really didn’t have to go after one disappointing season. Especially with new owners coming in.

Istanbul was better in my opinion.

We only had the half time break to re-adjust and come back out to play against a Milan side which for me was ALOT better than the Barcelona side we just faced.

Player for player much better - with the exception of Messi.

I respect your view, mate, but I don't agree. The wheels were clearly coming off Rafa's regime and, especially against that background, FSG would almost certainly have wanted their own man in anyway.

Oh, I’m sure they would have wanted someone else in. But wish Benítez could have ‘steadied the ship’ instead of Budgie, Joe Cole, Konchesky and that shit midfielder who’s name escapes me.

We’ve been over this a million times before, and hindsight is a beautiful thing...
Rafa had to go at the time, we were going backwards.
But we fucked up in every sense and possible way when hiring that old wrinkey owlfaced bastard.

For all the good Rafa did, I still feel he fucked up the title in 08/09 by selling Keane and not replacing him.
Not that Keane was brilliant, he wasnt, but he could have replaced Torres in a much better way when he was out injured.

Imagine how many defensive mids and reserve goalies we'd have now if Rafa was still here.

We were goign backwards, but the fault was not Rafa's - it was the owners. We continued to o backwards after he left and until FSG
